The Christmas special

Was weak and messy, it had a ton of ideas piled in but only one interested me and could have been the entire episode: the Doctor and Anita running the hotel for a year which would have made for a more interesting episode then the rest.

I'm still not completely sold on Ncuti's Doctor. I don't really know why. I don't dislike him , but he almost feels too manic... too extra... for the Doctor. The middle part of this with him just being nothing but downtime, does actually help. Seeing him when he's not always "on". Its something that was largely missing last season. And that seems to be the best part of this episode, not just my opinion but others I talk to and articles I read and such all seem to agree they wanted more of that story.

Also this is the second time in a row, that Villengard is kinda foiled by a ghost in the machine. Kinda done/explained better here rather then "suddenly dad does the thing".

Further more... I don't think I really needed the star of Bethleham to have a ******* origin story. This is part of what I mean about this Doctor feeling... extra. It couldn't just be a star, no its gotta be an a really super important star. You're getting really close to the Doctor dabbling in religious figures there. And its not like "Oh this is the creature that inspired so many lores about ultimate evil" but aren't actually facing the literal Devil. This is supposed to be the actual star and even the Doctor is flabergasted by it.

I think the episode would've been stronger if they'd left off the last few seconds in which they couldn't resist a "See, see? Aren't we clever?" Like, I'd figured the bit out several minutes before, it didn't need a label. I guess the writers still think they're writing down to children.

I still don't understand how he knew what the correct code was. It seemed they did the usual and relied on quickly blurted-out exposition, rather than showing it (which I believe is a constant negative side of the Doctor Who shows).

Also, I can only guess that all the guests at the place are in fancy-dress, so that they can be icognito? Like how they do for special away missions or when they want to use the holodeck in Startrek sometimes? It didn't seem clear (as the opposite would "break the prime directive" sotospeak). In this case, some exposition WOULD have been appreciated (again, which seems to be a common flaw in DW)...

Also, I thought the tall chap that "wouldn't let him down" was played by John Walliams (it sounded to me like him) but I think wrong. It hasn't been the first time he's be connected with Doctor Who and Christmas though...

They did explain it. "I remembered my future self saying it." "Its a bootstrap paradox." "It didn't exist until it did, same thing happened with the universe and no one complained."

As for the guests, they specifically point out that the Hotel has an appearal store, for yes being able to fit into the era's they are checking into.
