The main message of the GOP is nothing but "We're not the Dems/libs/whatever we want you to be mad at right now," so as long as that keeps up, the base doesn't care what else happens.

Thing is, that used to be enough to motivate them to fall in lock-step behind whoever seemed to be the majority at the time, so as not to let their infighting keep them from getting a win. That's one big reason why they've always been so hard to beat: even if they can't agree on anything, they will abandon their convictions if they think it's the key to winning.
Seeing that just abruptly stop like this feels like something out of a fantasy movie where the effects of a mind control spell wear off and everyone suddenly starts saying what they really think.
For the past few years, they were all in lockstep behind Trump. Then he started visibly losing, which is the one thing they can't tolerate. Nobody else has stepped up yet with enough force of personality to drag them back into line. Even opposing the Dems only goes so far when they don't have anyone to tell them how.
The only other candidate right now looks like DeSantis, who's basically Trump if he actually knew what he was doing, so we'll see how the future goes, but right now they're an army of idiots without a general.

Desantis is a failure on the national stage because he has the exact opposite problem of trump: he cannot go off script. The second he has to go "off the cuff" his biases and explosive temper work against him instantly.

Yeah, but... they were going to do that kind of jive anyway. It also gives them the opportunity to strip mcarthy of his title with a single person backing that: I figured they would do that pretty much immeadiately.
