What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

They don't get on the news much, but they exist.

Here are some examples about 60% down the page.
Huh. TIL there are members of the House who come from territories like Puerto Rico. They're not allowed to vote on the floor but it sounds like they're allowed to do everything else real Representatives can do.

...including run for Speaker, maybe? That would be pretty hilarious.

You actually don't have to be a member of the House to become Speaker.
That... sounds like an "Ain't no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" technicality to me. Has anyone actually tested that idea?

FB friend:
I love the way the GOP has no idea how to solve its House Speaker problem because they can't find a nominee who is acceptable to both GOP moderates and GOP fascists.

It obviously doesn't occur to them that they could nominate a reasonable person who promises to work with Democrats and can therefore convince a handful of Democrats to vote for him. In their minds, it's just a given that they're at war with Democrats, so that's simply not an option. Even the talking heads on the media don't mention this as an option.

Meanwhile, every time Democrats get into office, everyone urges them to be bipartisan. This is the political double-standard at work again: Republicans are allowed to throw tantrums, threaten to burn the house down, and otherwise be completely unreasonable, while Democrats are expected to be the adults in the room.

Right-wing media has the nerve to blame the House Democrats for allowing the House GOP to self-destruct:

Trump can't be Speaker by the Houses own rules. One of their rules basically says you can't be Speaker of the House if you're currently charged with a felony. Of course they'd just say it doesn't mean that or just try and change it.

It'll never happen anyway. Look how hard it was to make McCarthy Speaker.

Plus it would be way too difficult as Speaker to spend 90% of his working time watching Fox News and/or golfing.

It isn't a by-law. It is just one of the ones Kevin set at the start of the term. I have no idea if it is one they always set, but it has no teeth.

He'll never take the job because he'd have to actually stay in DC rather than flit around the country for rallies and other ego-stroking. Won't stop him from trying to play the victim over not getting it, though.

When asked it sounded pretty open to it. He said he would do whatever was needed for the country. I think he kinda likes the idea. He certainly should. If he got that job it would sure help him get the one he wants next year. And....I'm really not sure the GOP members wouldn't unite behind him enough to get the votes.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

The GOP can unite behind the idea all they want: they still need SOME democrats to vote for the speaker and they will not vote for trump.

During the 15 Rounds when they elected McCarthy, Trump was floated as Speaker several times. He couldn't garner enough votes to even come close to McCarthy.

Ironbite-they'll float the idea but in the end it comes down to Gym Jordon and a cancer sufferer

I'd vote the cancer sufferer... then demand they bootstrap themselves in to work every time they miss for a chemo treatment.

The only reason for Trump to want to be Speaker is that if Something Were To Happen to the current president and vice president, he'd automatically be next in line.
