Energon Universe - ongoing Transformers and G.I. Joe comics from Skybound

I just have a feeling that Void Rivals is probably the lowest selling of the Energon Universe books. So, they might decide to replace it with something else, purely for business reasons. But, I could be completely off on that. I have no idea how well or poorly Void Rivals is actually selling.

Looking at the sales figures on ICv2 (so can only see top 50; number in parentheses is overall rank in units sold among all single issues that month, spoilered for space):

July 2024
(5) Transformers #8
(16) Destro #2
(31) Void Rivals #11

June 2024
(5) Transformers #9
(9) Scarlett #1
(11) Destro #1
(36) Void Rivals #10

May 2024
(4) Transformers #8
(18) Cobra Commander #5
(21) Energon Universe 2024 Special (wow)
(32) Void Rivals #9

April 2024
(3) Transformers #7
(12) Cobra Commander #4
(26) Duke #5

March 2024
(6) Transformers #6
(18) Cobra Commander #3
(25) Void Rivals #7

So yeah, TF is easily their top seller (frequently in the top 5 of all comics period), the GIJOE stuff is doing pretty well, usually in the top 10-15, and Void Rivals is definitely the slowest seller of the Energon Universe stuff, in the 30s. Still nothing to sniff at though, that lands around the same area as titles like Wonder Woman or Immortal Thor, and Image doesn't have much else that hits the top 50.

Oh, it's consistently selling in the Top 50! That's pretty good, then. They might want to keep that going for a long haul. Glad to see I was wrong!

I'm still not sure how long Kirkman, himself, will stay on the book. If only because he likes to move on to different projects from time to time. But, if it keeps selling within the Top 50, then I could see him getting someone else to take it over, rather than combining it with another book.

Scarlett #4 is out!

This issue is basically one big ninja fight. Which isn't really a bad thing. All the action is fun. It just doesn't give one much to talk about.

We do finally find out what the weapon is that the Arashikage want so bad this issue. So, that's kind of a major development.

Otherwise, yeah, this is another solid issue. Although, again, nothing in the way of actual Transformer tie-in, if you only care about that side of things.
We take a moment away from this exciting Ninja Heist to bring you FEELINGS! Okay, it's kind of sweet for Scarlett and Jinx to reunite, but it's weird timing. Considering they're surrounded by ninja and yakuza and thieves. This feels like this should wait for a different moment. But, I guess being in a building that isn't full of the Arashikage's own cameras and spy equipment means this might actually BE the best moment they get to reconnect.

I don't know why Scarlett assumes Jinx can't attack her while they're hugging. It seems like that'd be the easiest time to stab her in the back. Also, Jinx is more upset about Scarlett killing her plants than about her infiltrating her ninja mission. Priorities!

Also, Scarlett finds out about Cobra for the first time! I don't recognize any of these Cobra agents, but they might be cameos that I just don't recognize.

And we FINALLY find out what the weapon is that the Arashikage have been after this whole time. The Sword of Life (AKA Inochi no Ken)! No, not Excalibur from the cartoon episode "Excalibur". And not the Sword of Destiny from the DiC season episode "The Sword". I'm pretty sure this Sword of Life is new. And...probably made out of Energon, since it's glowing pink? I'm guessing this is a Energon Saber of some sort. Not sure what that means going forward, but if I'm right, it could be a interesting development.

Transformers #12 came out last week (9/11), surprised to not see any comments here yet especially since it wraps up the second arc.

My thoughts:
I didn't comment on #11 because it was the first issue I didn't really like, but I knew the arc finale was coming up next so I'd wait to see how things turned out. Unfortunately I felt the same, not really liking it. It's not bad but definitely not vibing with me the same as the rest of the title so far.

- The Autobots' desire to not kill (well, most of them) is starting to grate. I was sorta on the fence re: Cliffjumper executing Starscream given the circumstances (and that Cliff isn't as much of a warrior here) but Optimus really screwed up with Shockwave in #11. Similarly, I think Optimus gets a little too bent out over crushing Shockwave's head. Dude definitely deserved it. I'm not saying I want Optimus to be the rage monster from the live-action movies but I also don't think he should be so regretful here.

- The way he talks about "something come over me" and looks at his hand, I had the thought that maybe Megatron's arm has been attached to Optimus so much it's influencing him? God I hope not, that would be dumb.

- Ultra Magnus looks like he's finally gonna get a chance to kick some ass... then sees Shockwave and immediately breaks down and goes who knows where. I get that PTSD is a thing, and totally understandable given that Magnus was tortured for years, but it's still a really disappointing moment. I was hoping he'd get a chance to amend in #12, but nope, he doesn't show up at all.

- I did really like Elita's heel turn here blowing up the portal, and never setting the charges. I do sorta question Optimus' decision about blowing up the energy though - surely it can't be returned to Earth, right? It certainly can't be turned back into whales... It does have the benefit of stopping the teleportation (so he can remain on Earth) but once Elita boxed him in, I do kinda wonder if he might've not been better off just keeping it intact. I suppose it is supposed to be a tough decision, and if Cliffjumper survives with him, it could be argued to at least be 'emotionally' right, but I'm not sure Optimus made the right call here.

- Pretty sure Earth would be completely extinction-level screwed with a piece of Cybertron that big hitting it, but to be fair, it is a pretty common thing in sci-fi stories and such to minimize such consequences for Rule of Cool reasons.

On re-read I did like it more than the first read, but I still do have some reservations.

My comic shop finally got in Destro #4 and Transformers #12 in, so now I can finally talk about them!

First up Destro #4.

It’s solid. And there actually IS a little, tiny bit of Transformers connection in this issue…sorta. We learn more about a character who showed up a few issues ago…and we get a bit of a twist. It’s an interesting development. I’m looking forward to the conclusion to this miniseries.

Even though, I still feel like this is skippable if you don’t care about the GI Joe side of things. Mainly, this is about the formation of the Cobra organization as we usually know them from other media. If you’re not interested in seeing that, I think you can skip it. But, it's a fun time seeing all these factions trying to stab each other in the back...only for it all to end in a big metaphorical group hug.
Destro spent BILLIONS of dollars creating technology that doesn't even work just so he could unload it onto someone else and make them THINK he was brilliant and ahead of the curve...There's a metaphor for the tech industry here, if you look VERY closely. I know, it's so subtle.

I guess Darklon (the person, not the country) is in control of MARS now that Destro’s captured. And he’s making a deal with Tomax and Xamot.

Destroy learns all about what GI Joe has been up to in some of the other minies. Not the best look, with the US government teaming up with Destro. I’m not sure if the GI Joe fans will like it, but I’ll admit, it makes for good drama.

Astoria Carlton Ritz shows back up! I was starting to wonder if she’d actually be important to the rest of the miniseries. Turns out SHE’S Chameleon, the assassin who tried to kill Destro last issue. I honestly didn’t see that coming. Good job! Also, Astoria’s tech-jinxes have a technical term now. The FLUKE Pulse. Some fathers give their daughters pepper spray, others give their daughters EMPs.

Turns out she was working on Project Overkill! A series of satellites that would bring peace to the world…or else! Overkill is usually a robot who controls the BATS in other GI Joe media, so I’m guessing this Overkill will eventually become more like THAT Overkill. Although, there are versions that are a cyborg. So, maybe the satellite AI is going to merge with someone else?

Also, Tomax/Xamot/Darklon decide to bring in ANOTHER party to their business merger…Cobra Commander! So, yeah, this is basically Cobra as we know it being formed. Neat!

Then we have Transformers #12, and this one was a doozy.

It’s the second arc’s big finale. Your head may explode with excitement, and I don’t think it’ll be the only one. I enjoyed it. Again though, it’s VERY violent. And kinda dark. But, I’m still enjoying it. It’s bombastic in a way few Transformer comics are.

There might be some interesting fallout from this issue…maybe literally. We'll see.
“We’re in the Circle Pit, now!” Was that a COMIC reference!? A reference to the gladiator matches on Cybertron?! In THIS heavily-cartoon inspired comic?! *Looks up what a circle pit is to see if it's a specific reference to anything* Oh...it's a reference to Mosh Pits, like at a concert. Nevermind, I got excited for nothing.

Carly’s here to save the day! I’m a little glad she came to save her buddy Cliffjumper. Cliffjumper really needs a win after the last few issues.

Because this is going to be the ONLY win Cliffjumper gets this issue. Getting pinned by Devastator’s big toe (truck). And getting batted around like a cat’s toy. Smacking head first right into the Combaticons…which only makes them ANGRIER. It’s never a good day to be Cliffjumper in this universe.

But, hey, blowing up Shockwave’s tower also sends Cybertron back where it used to be! Convenient!

You know, Shockwave hasn’t been in this universe very long. But, it still feels pretty cathartic to see Optimus just wail away on the guy for all his schemes. Don’t mess with the whales, ya creep!

Optimus sees baby Spike slowly get taken over by wires. And I can’t help but be reminded of the Swarm from G2. Or the cyberforming goo from Dreamwave. I wonder if they’re foreshadowing something?

Optimus using both hands to gouge out Shockwave’s single eye is…disturbing. But, I do like the intensity. I guess this is the end of Shockwave, at least until they can get repair parts for his head.

Okay, I’ll admit, I was NOT expecting Elita to blow up the Space Bridge to trap Optimus back on Cybertron. But, it kind of tracks.

And…look, I’ll miss the whales…but blowing up the Energon wouldn’t bring the whales back. I don’t think there’s a way to reverse this. So, Optimus deciding to just blow it all up was a little short sighted. It’s a even bigger waste than otherwise. But…I do appreciate the he’s tempted to do it, if only because it’s so horrifying to him. I like the bit of character it gives Optimus, even though I’m not sure it really reflects well on him or not. I’m a bit split on this decision. Just…DUMPING a ton of Energon into the ocean might not be too good for whatever sea life remains, just saying.

I guess Elita will probably be a enemy the next time we see her.

Also, hopefully nothing important was in this sector of the planet that got shaved off.

Lookit Beachcomber! Going all Silver Surfer on us! This is probably the best Beachcomber moment we’ve ever gotten. Surf those spaceways!

Okay, I guess I’m a bit confused. Was the stuff in the tubes JUST Energon or was it also all the ocean water that Shockwave was sucking up? Because, if Optimus just returned all the ocean water to Earth…then I guess that’s a okay call. But, if it’s ocean water MIXED with Energon…I don’t even know what that would do to the environment. Is all of Earth going to end up mutating because of this?

“What have I done?” Well, the sea level has probably risen about 50 feet, due to all the new metal in the ocean, I guess.

And we don’t find out where Ultra Magnus went this issue. I guess we’ll get a issue with him later. Travelling the road. Hiding out. Riding the rails like a hobo. *Sad Hulk music plays*
- The way he talks about "something come over me" and looks at his hand, I had the thought that maybe Megatron's arm has been attached to Optimus so much it's influencing him? God I hope not, that would be dumb.
You know what? I didn't even really think about that. Mostly, I was thinking this was still caused by combining his Spark with Sparkplug. But, it's possible it's both. Maybe there's this theme of Optimus slowly becoming more and more this Frankenstein monster thing that he starts losing who he once was? Or maybe a Ship of Theseus Paradox moment, where we start to wonder how much of Optimus is still Optimus if we keep changing more and more of his parts?

I'm willing to see where they're going with this.

I do sorta question Optimus' decision about blowing up the energy though - surely it can't be returned to Earth, right? It certainly can't be turned back into whales...
Same. I guess it probably has to do with the ocean water that Shockwave also stole from Earth? But even if that's the case...Optimus just dumped TONS of "radioactive" sea water onto the Earth. That CANNOT be a good thing! The entire planet really should be a very different place after something like that, with a LOT of kaiju roaming around. But...I mean, GI Joe still has to exist, so probably not?

Transformers #13 out today.

Starscream has (unsurprisingly) survived his fall and is reliving pre-war memories with his buddies Jetfire and Genvo (who somewhat ironically has some Autobot symbol detailing on his helmet). In a super-obscure reference, SS is actually named Ulchtar at this point! They watch a Guardian pass by, and Ulchtar even stops Genvo from crushing a helpful bug, commenting that they're 'beautiful'. Later on, Jetfire departs on his mission to the stars to save Cybertron. Genvo joins up with the Decepticons and is killed by the Autobots in battle, dying in Ulchtar's arms. Megatron makes him an offer to join and get revenge, and Ulchtar gives his name as Starscream (based off Genvo's dying words).

In present day, Starscream is being salvaged by some (new rando?) guys working for M.A.R.S. Industries, which I guess is a Destro thing (I don't know much about GIJOE).

First things first, new artist, Jason Howard. I was kinda hoping we'd be getting back DWJ but looking at the future solicits, doesn't seem that'll be the case (#14 is Howard, #15 is Corona). It's not bad (I still remember Ramondelli), and there are some cool shots (I really like the spread with Omega Supreme) but overall definitely feels like a step down from DWJ/Corona.

Big LOL at Megatron's gun mode being a full-on tank with a handle sticking out the bottom... it even has treads!

It was an okay issue. Not surprised at all to have a 'break' issue after last arc ended. It's a decent flashback, clearly a very different Starscream way back. I don't think the death of his friend would completely turn him into the bloodthirsty killer we've seen on Earth, but I guess it could be the first step down a dark path... I wonder if we'll see more. Looking back at #1, I wonder if Screamer actually somewhat believes in the Autobots being "true evil". I'm not wild about feeling the need to come up with a hackneyed explanation for his name ("I'm alone." "Hmm... Solo.") Genvo's line is just incredibly awkward IMO. The Ulchtar reference was cute though.

If the scene of Jetfire leaving is supposed to be when he leaves on his voyage (until he gets reactivated again in Void Rivals), doesn't seem to quite fit... for one, he wouldn't know Ulchtar's new name, and it also doesn't seem like he'd be buddy-buddy with Optimus. I suppose he could have been hanging out with him on the side away from his buddies but doesn't seem like it, especially given Genvo was in with the Decepticons already.

Do it Hasbro. You cowards.

The gun tank is incredible.

Anyway I really dug the issue. I'm actually ok with Skybound not going too much into the War's origins. IDW really went all out on that, and I think it's good for a new publisher to ignore that to set up a new status quo first before exploring it. This is probably the most in-depth explanation of Skybound's backstory so far, and I dig it.

The vibe is that an energy crisis led to what are essentially militias popping up to carve up what's left, and the Autobots and Decepticons were the last one standing.
There's something tragically relatable about Genvo, Ulchtar, and Jetfire just watching the night sky and talking about the fighting that's broken out, like it's some distant thing that isn't their business. Very true to life about how civil strife builds and builds until it violently makes it your problem when you thought it was distant.

Starscream joining the Decepticons because his friend died in a firefight is also very tragically true to life.

Oh, there's a thread for this.

Basically, is this any good? I was going to pick up the volume 1 TPB to test it out, but need some input first.

(FWIW I grew up reading the Marvel UK comic, that was my G1 fiction as the cartoon was barely shown here. Didn't like Marvel's G2 comic; didn't like much of Dreamwave's output beyond War Within and Armada/Energon when it looked like it was picking up; enjoyed IDW 1.0, as in the bits up to All Hail Megatron, for all its numerous faults.)

Please tell me you don't need to read various non-Transformers comics series to 'get' the main storyline. Because that would be possibly a reason for me to not read the Transformers parts in the first place.

No you don't. You can just read the TF stuff and be fine.

As for if it's any good? I'm in love with what Skybound is doing and if it can keep up this pace then it's going to quickly become my favourite G1 comic continuity.

Everything connects, but isn't required; Each comic is its own self contained story. The only series that might be important to TF is Cobra Commander's Miniseries. And the Free Comic Book Day issue. But those still aren't required to understand anything in the main TF book.

TF #13:

"Ulchtar" was a deep cut I was not expecting. I thought Genvo's design was really cool. And the passing overhead of Omega reminded me a lot of Ruckley's worldbuilding, which was neat. (The use of "they" had me anticipating multiple Titans, and I like to think that semi-regular Titan flybys could still be an actual thing.)

Is the MARS salvage guy supposed to be some name Joe or Cobra? He seems important but I couldn’t immediately place him? Maybe Taurus/Bull from Slaughter’s Marauders?

Of note, MARS is currently under ownership of The Crimson Twins (Tomax and Xamot) and aligned with Cobra. Destro was presumed dead but it now working under the auspices of G.I Joe which is also where the Baroness is…

Scarlett #5 and Transformers #13 are out!

As far as Scarlett goes, the miniseries ends in a fun way. I do feel like this mini is ultimately skippable, if you don't really care about it. But, there IS one plot point by the end that will likely come up again in the future. Overall, this miniseries felt more like setting up pieces to be in place for later, rather than something that was totally satisfying on it's own merits. It's a fun action movie romp of a time. But, it ultimately didn't feel that substantial, to me at least.

I guess Scarlett's actually going to be staying with the Arashikage for now. She isn't joining GI Joe OR Cobra yet.

Still no sign of Snake Eyes, either. Snake Eyes, along with Grimlock, are both conspicuously absent from the Energon Universe. I feel like they're setting something up with that. Maybe it was just a personal challenge for Skybound? Seeing if they could get these franchises off the ground without using their most popular characters? Or...maybe they're eventually going to do a miniseries where Snake Eyes is hunting Robo-Dinos in the "Not-Savage Land"?

And, it turns out I was right. The Sword of Life is indeed made out of Energon. I'm not sure if Energon really makes for the best swords, but it makes for a fun light show. We don't really find out what this actually means, or why it's important right now. That's probably coming later. But, it cuts things real good!

I guess this is probably another plot point to lead into the inevitable Transformers/Joe crossover that MUST be happening at some point. Surely.

As far as Transformers goes, I actually kind of liked this one. It does something I wasn't really expecting. I won't say what outside of spoilers. But, it's a different kind of issue. More character focused. You could almost call this a "Spotlight" issue, like they used to do in the IDW days. This might be worth checking out, if you just want to try out the series without going in ALL the way. This one is sorta-kinda a stand alone issue, even if it is coming off of things that have happened before. You would get spoiled about certain things. But, I think this issue might actually make for a decent "sampler".

I wasn't expecting this to be a flashback to Starscream's origin.

And they're canonizing Ulchtar! Starscream's early name from Denny O'Neil's early drafts of the Transformer's script! Okay, kind of a crazy thing to do. But, this is maybe the deepest cut the Energon Universe has made so far, so I'm kind of here for it.

Soundwave: "You kicked my Ravage. The only path left is extermination." Deserved. A scene so nice, we get to see it twice!

For some reason, Genvo's design reminds me a lot of Metalhawk's inner robot. I don't know why, I think it's just the color scheme. I don't think it's on purpose, just something that stuck out to me.

Ulchtar likes the robo bugs. He just thinks they're neat!

Okay, Ulchtar blowing up a power plant just so Omega Supreme will wave to them and notice that they exist is kind of crazy...and it kind of works. I actually like this moment. Plus...Kup!

Well, there goes Jetfire. Off to go on a trip that he's going to regret for the rest of his life. Kind of depressing when you know how it all turns out for him.

Also, Overcharge (or another Blitzwing-type bot?) gets to cameo. This issue is just full of little easter eggs.

"You screamed the stars into seeing us..." Forced...yet kind of poetic. I mean, they didn't bother to explain why he was called "Ulchtar", before, so the name explanation is kind of pointless. But, still, there were probably worse ways of doing this.

"You were the chosen one Starscream! You were supposed to bring balance to the Matrix!" Okay, Starscream crawling out of the volcano without legs just makes me think of Revenge of the Sith.

And Starscream gets "saved" in present day by some MARS agents working for Cobra! Including...a bunch of guys we've never met before! You have hundreds of Joe characters and you decide you want to make up new ones?

I'm guessing the one going on about being related to someone important is talking about Joe Colton, the original GI Joe? I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be Baron Ironblood or Iron Klaw, or some other villain from GI Joe that we already know. Either way, it's probably more fodder for the crossover. Right?

Plus, we get to see Megatron's new tank-gun form, in the past. It's goofy. But, if this is the only way to get a "gun" form of Megatron these days...I guess I'm for it. It's a workaround that I don't think they've tried yet.

We also got a preview of GI Joe #1 in both of these issues. It's basically just a roll call, but it's fun.
The splash page actually has kind of a neat 3D-ish effect when you see it physically. It doesn't quite translate digitally. But, the combination of colors and linework and "textures" kind of makes all the characters pop off the page a bit. it's a neat effect! Hopefully, they find ways to use that in fun ways going forward.

Destro #5 is out!

It's the end of the series, and it's basically one big fight. It's a fun fight, but you can probably guess how it's going to end by how the rest of the series is going. There's a couple of swerves I wasn't expecting though. And there is one "teaser" for something in the Transformers side of things at the very end of the issue, but I'll save that for the spoilers.

Overall, this miniseries had a lot of action, and it was a fun time. I wouldn't call it "necessary" reading, though, if you only care about the Transformers side of things. Again, this is mostly a story about the formation of Cobra as a organization. If you don't really care about that, you're probably safe skipping it.

So, shock of shocks, Destro comes back to punch Tomax, Xamot, and Cobra Commander in the face for trying to steal MARS from him. But, he eventually just kind of....stops and decides they're all better off working together against the alien threat he suspects is coming for them all. Which IS abrupt, but...fair enough. *shrug*

"I forgive you." Kind of a memorable line, if only because it's coming from Destro. Again, it's abrupt, like they only realized they were running out of pages halfway through making this issue. But, still, I don't hate.

Also, remember Project Overkill? The killer artificially intelligent space satellite? Yeah...that's not going to be a plot point moving forward. I honestly don't even know why they introduced that idea, if they weren't going to do anything with it. Destro blows it up with a nuke to impress Astoria. I guess they're a couple now? Astoria has a type it seems.

Also, Darklon gets punished for working with Tomax and Xamot. Oof. I wonder if we'll ever see Darklon, again? He's not usually the most prominent or popular of characters.

As for the "teaser", Cobra Commander sees the chunk of Cybertron crashing down towards Earths from Transformers #12. I guess someone's going fishing, soon. That's probably going to lead to something. I'm not sure what, but something!

Void Rivals #13 is out!

This issue actually feels like it has a lot going on! Which is a good thing!

Sorta. The problem with this particular issue is that, contrary to other past issues, there might actually be a bit TOO MUCH going on all at the same time? This issue is just constantly changing viewpoints and focus characters every 2 to 3 pages. We focus on a lot of different parties doing a lot of different things. There's about 5 focus characters all doing different things in different places and it's a little jarring just checking in on everyone for a page or two only to cut over to someone else with very little transition.

I know what I've said about past issues feeling uneventful. And I stand behind that. This just might be going too far in the other direction. And by checking in on EVERYONE we actually don't get that much forward progress in any one person's story.

Still, though, I would say this is more interesting than not. Things are happening, even if it does feel unfocused now. We are learning about the different factions and organizations on this world. There is SOME progress being made. So, I still think it's worth checking out, if you want to see some of the Expanded Energon Universe.

We get to see what Cobra-La is doing up in space! Pythona's found the planetoid that Darak and Solila got stranded on at the beginning of the series! And...that's it for this issue. See what I'm saying about some of these stories not getting much forward progress?

At the same time, Solila and Handroid slowly make their way into the center of the planet. It's...probably going to take a while going by just climbing down. But, she does end up finding a Black Pyramid. Not to be confused with the Pyramid of Darkness from GI Joe. Or the Black Pyramid from RID 2001. Different things.

Meanwhile, Skuxxoid is sad! So very sad! So sad that he doesn't even care about MONEY, anymore. Please care about this character, we beg you! I guess he misses his family. Buck up, buckaroo! With your family gone you have all the time in the world to catch up on all those TV shows you could never fit into your schedule now!

Elsewhere, Darak ends up meeting with his father, trying to convince him to stop prolonging this war between these two groups of people. But the thing is...Unity is the path to destruction! Dun-Dun-DUUUUN! So, we might finally be getting a few answers soon-ish. Maybe we're close to finding out what's going on, finally!

Concurrently, Premiere Zalilak (the leader of the other group...the triangle headed guy... does that help?) meets with the High Priestess of the Keepers of the Light (you know the leader of that group that Solila is a part of). And it turns out she WANTS the Unity to happen. Because it WILL bring about a end, but it will also cause a new beginning! Dun-Dun-DUUUN even moreso, even!

...They sure are hyping up this "Unity" thing. I hope it's worth all this build up.
