Premiering in theaters around the world on Wednesday, May 15th, the Transformers 40th Anniversary Event is slated to have showings for just two more days in the near future: Saturday, May 18th, and Sunday, May 19th. Check your local listings, times and availability may vary. Rather than a reshowing of the original 1986 feature film, Hasbro has instead elected to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their beloved franchise by going all the way back to the beginning. Back… further back… wait, are you grabbing a copy of Marvel’s The Transformers #1? Okay, while accurate to the time of year, that’s too far back. Push it up a bit. Yeah, there we go. Ahem. Rather than reshowing the original movie, they’re reshowing the first four episodes of the original smash-hit syndicated cartoon television show. Something about that ring a bell? Yep, those are the same four episodes they pulled from their YouTube channel back around March or so, but with some bells and whistles, or at least some variety of party favors and noisemakers added. So, how is it? Here’s Internet Personality and fellow Torontonian Vangelus with his debriefing of the event he attended: This pretty much corroborates what Allspark forum member Sabrblade had to say: The redubbed first episode of “More Than Meets The Eye” sounds like it’s not to be missed, and yet, maybe not worth the price of admission, especially as the revitalized episode seems to leave the rest of the apparently Rhino-quality episode presentation feeling a little lackluster for the expected experience by comparison. If you do decide to go, however, and you’re into this sort of thing, be sure to grab the Transformers 40th Anniversary Event popcorn bucket and cup combo (especially since they’re reportedly going for $50 on eBay right now)! I’d consider going for the cup alone, but it would seem that we don’t have those in Canada. You can also get them, along with other neat Transformers merch, online at the Cinemark Shop for $12.99. Also, that’s for the U.S. only, too. Bah. Anyway, have you checked the Transformers 40th Anniversary Event out for yourself already? Were you even planning to? Are you still planning to, or planning to go again? Or have these testimonials warded you off, and you’re just going to hope they do an online showing of it or something? Collecting Transformers merch is one thing, but Beast Wars is a whole other animal. Former Transformers Creative Manager Rik Alvarez is back, and this time, he’s not alone! This time, he’s teaming up with Peter Chavez IV to bring you all sorts of weird, wild, and downright wacky stuff from not only the American run of Beast Wars, but Japan’s Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo as well! In addition to some crazy goods like an inflatable Optimus Primal sword (which apparently has a Socker Bopper-like counterpart shaped like Megatron’s T-Rex head-hand), lots of collector’s coins, crazy covers for Japanese theme song singles, and so much more, there are also some interesting trivia tidbits, like the time there was a contest to transform Randy and Mach Kick that had no winner, Fun Pub’s plans for the Beast Wars IIGalvatron mold in their first convention set, and an untold western origin for Lio Convoy. How many of these do you have? Heck, do you have anything shown here? Did you ever get to try Beast Wars II sausages? During today’s Hasbro Pulse Transformers Fanstream, Hasbro and Robosen Robotics pulled back the curtain on three years’ worth of rigorous research and development to reveal… Megatron, the world’s first auto-converting Decepticon! Flagship Megatron stands at 21 inches tall, making him a truly terrifying titan of a tyrant, and boasts 118 smart microchips that control 36 high-precision servo motors, allowing the Decepticon leader to perform fluid transformations and actions. As with others in the Robosen Transformersline, you can control his actions using a smart phone app or more than 50 voice commands. And of course, this Megatron talks back, using the voice of none other than the originator of the role, Frank Welker himself. Just for this project, Welker went into the recording booth and didn’t come out until he’d performed more than 270 unique lines and fan-favorite phrases, which “allow users to experience Megatron like never before, and in the most genuine way.” This version of the character seemingly takes a few cues from incarnations throughout the 2010s, including a stature and alt-mode reminiscent of Combiner Wars Megatron, while sporting highlights from 112(!) LEDs that feel like a callback to the War for Cybertron video games. And that fusion cannon isn’t just for show — he comes with four “tank shell” soft-tipped projectiles that actually fire (plus an Optimus Prime target to practice on). In robot mode, he can wield the included illuminating Energon Sword and Energon Mace, inspired by the weapons wielded by the original Japanese toy and Generation One cartoon, respectively. And he’ll really whip that mace around, too, thanks to a number of points of articulation in the chain, so watch out! Other accessories include an instruction manual, collectible coin, and charging cable and block. And for those who want to get a little more touchy-feely with their Emperors of Destruction, there are two touchsense zones. Give them a poke to see how the Voice of Doom reacts — if you dare! To bring peace to your toy shelf through tyranny will run you $899 USD for a 30-day window upon its pre-sale release, before the price transforms into an even more formidable $1,199. Pre-orders are available at Robosen’s website. And in so doing, you might be one of the random lucky 40 who receive a surprise autographed version of the figure, signed by none other than Frank Welker himself! Just keep in mind when your order arrives: No one summons Megatron. Does this reveal make you want to rise up? Will this Megatron be enough to force your Robosen Autobots to retreat? Discuss it at the “ Robosen G1 Megatron” thread in our forums. Not a member? Register now! It’s totally free, save for that teeny little fragment of your Spark that helps sustain our existence! With the future of the Power Rangers brand seemingly up in the air, some have speculated that under the umbrella of Hasbro, it is now effectively “dead.” But wait! We’ve received word today that the legacy of Power Rangers will live on! …at Playmates Toys. Here’s the press release from Hasbro: For those of you saying “I ain’t reading all that, I’m happy for you though, or sorry that happened,” the gist is that starting next year, Playmates is doing a kid-targeted line based on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (aka “their Generation One that no one can let go of”) all across the world, save for Asia. This includes “action figures, blasters, plush, role play, vehicles and accessories.” This doesn’t mean that The House the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Built owns the brand, though. Hasbro still has that plum sitting comfortably in their pocket, and will continue to reap the rewards of licensing things like “publishing, fashion and footwear, promotions and more.” It sounds like they still have plans to release stuff through Hasbro Pulse, too, and will feature it at big industry events like San Diego Comic Con. So yeah, “Large Toy Company Hires Smaller Toy Company to Make Their Toys for Them” pretty much seems to sum up the current direction of things. But then, Hasbro’s been subletting their brands out to companies like Super7 and McFarlane for years now, so in a sense, this isn’t anything new. A couple of other notes of no real consequence: Yes, I know that Playmates doesn’t own the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand the way Hasbro now owns Power Rangers, but if you can think of a more synonymous brand to use for a header image, I’d like to hear it. Yes, I came really close to using the team-up image from the Power Rangers in Space episode “Shell Shocked,” but figured that after more than 25 years — and with Mighty Morphin being the particular call-out of the press release, the more contemporary team-up was the way to go. Sources: Hasbro, via TOYCOLLECTR and Pixel Dan. Think this news is morphenomenal? Or just further evidence to the running notion that the Power Rangers brand is “dead”?
