A Long Time Ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... - Star Wars General Discussion

Its on my list, I've been waiting for it; but not had the time to get around to it yet.
It’s OUT! First two episodes!

It’s “Space Goonies” in all the positive ways. It’s very “Amblin” in ways you just don’t see in most media these days. Accessible to kids and families, but it doesn’t talk down to either group.

Most of my reservations come from how Disney has been handling its recent series. Will it be a complete story…or will we be left with a cliffhanger with a questionable future? That’s the biggest albatross I feel the series probably has on it.

The first episode is very slow, but at the same time something I wouldn't mind seeing more of now and then: Slice of Life in the SW universe. We get a lot of high adventure stuff, but now and then I think it would be nice to have some look in on normal life in the galaxy. It can be great for world/lore building.

The second episode doesn't waste any time though and we get neck deep in the actual plot. So far this is exactly what I was hoping it would be. Its something very unique for Star Wars and if it remains high quality like this is a great family series to further pull a new generation of kids into the series. SW has tried kid/family stuff before but its usually been... not good at best...

Minor nitpick, looking up some info, mostly just to see if their home planet is completely new or something mentioned before (considering its supposed to be legendary/mythical) apparently the Blue elephant boy is a completely different race then the other blue elephant aliens we've seen before.

Max Rebo is very much not an elephant. See, well, pretty much his entire music library:

Neither are the Chevin, strictly speaking, and one of their characters in the Classic Trilogy was even named "Ephant Mon"! 😄

Anyway, I noticed that Disney has, in ancillary media, tried very hard to canonize the original prototype Ortolan design -- the one that wasn't actually used in Return of the Jedi because it was impossible to puppeteer effectively.

By contrast, prior to the acquisition comics and novels went with the Kenner action figure design:

Now, it's not clear to me if the Ortolan design changed between 1983 and 1985 (and Disney is changing it back), or no-one at Lucasfilm deemed the number of Ortolan limbs to be a high priority prior to the 2020s, but here we are.

(For the curious, Max Rebo didn't have a lower body design for what we saw on screen, but the shoulder/arm placement of the action figure is accurate to the puppet seen in the film.)

Yeah - I'm convinced Neel is simply Filoni and the gang making Kenner's mistake official as a new species.

I mean, we now officially have Lumpy's favorite dance troupe canonized too, so anything is possible!

The lighting on all these Star Wars shows seem very dark to me. I can't tell what is going on half the time.

I agree with some critics that Skeleton Crew's episode length is too short. The first two episodes was really one short episode (as they were bulked-up with 6+ minutes of credits).

Its likely to cover up bad CGI, they did that with the Little Mermaid and the Snowwhite trailers, using bad CGI as they seem hell bent on wasting money on other things that are pointless!

I've read in multiple places it's the downside to most things being formatted for OLED screens now. Regular high-def can't do the full blacks leading to an over all darker tone.

The first episode of Skeleton Crew had world building that was really off the beaten path for Star Wars that ran long enough to get a little tedious, but all of that without being really unpleasant. The second was just a little chaotic for me. The third episode balanced things out and was genuinely fun for me.

I like it when a show as short and small as this ones takes the moment to remystery one of its mysteries. They showed us in the trailer and in the second episode that TADA Jude Law is a Jedi. Well, maybe he is, but episode 3 put it back into at least dramatic irony mode. It could be that he is being cautious because Jedi don't have the rep everything that they have on At Atin. Or it could be that he was using some parlor trick to gain their trust.

There is a couple seconds shot of a couple Jawas that bothered me. My impression has always been that I don't know what they actually look like because their faces are always in shadow, but they have glowy yellow eyes. On my screen THESE Jawas' heads were not shadowed. I could see definition and they were foregrounded in their hoods and they were just BLACK and formless with glowy yellow eyes.

So its interesting that Jude's character seems to have the moniker of Crimson Jack; since that's been a reoccurring Pirate character from the comics dating all the way back to the old Marvel comics. I wonder if its supposed to be him, or if we have a Dread Pirate Roberts situation.

How long has Crimson Jack been operating in the comics?

And is Jarod Na Nod even a real name?

It's on my list too, but it will probably be after Christmas before I get time to watch it.

Crimson Jack's first appearance was in 1977, so he's one of those characters that's been around since practically the beginning, and has even showed up in modern comics. He was originally an antagonist for Han Solo.

However this guy is also Captain Silva and Jarod Na Nod, thats three different monikers, so who knows what is the truth with him.

In fact, I believe he was introduced in the first issue after the end of New Hope. He's why Han couldn't pay off Jabba after all.

Last night I realized that SM-33 is a droid name for Smee. I'm slow sometimes...(ask my wife how long it took me to get the joke in the title for blink-182's "Take Off Your Pants" album title. (Spoiler: I figured it out earlier this year...))
