More to the point: appealing to the GOP means moving towards their point of view. Their point of view is fascism. We do not want to meet them halfway. We want to bury them both literally and metaphorically.

I'm pretty sure Ted Cruz tried the "That's not very Reagan of you" argument in early 2016. It didn't work.
He was. But now that's Trump. Trump has turned almost the entire party into a cult who legitimately think of him as a literal god, and will gladly throw anyone under the bus, past or present, if their vision for America doesn't align perfectly with his.
