"Ah, that's very sweet of you, Static," said Amber, with a smile she quickly reconsidered. "And ... sad, and also I'm very sorry of course," she said. "But very sweet of you as well." She nudged the Study door open with her magic as they approached. "Honestly, I don't know why I was so worried about having to confront Rhapsody. You know, some things just can never be quite as terrifying as you've built them up to be in your mind! I do admit I didn't expect quite so much running for my life, of course."

Kitchen:

Harmony collapses in a huddled mass on the floor and she seems close to hyperventilation, luckily for her and her two tagalongs the room was free of anything supernatural. Just a broken mare on the verge on a mental breakdown as whatever strength she has has collapsed after losing total faith in not only Rhapsody's friends but the only one she thought she'd liked. She was all alone, and it was clear from the harlot's words they really didn't care about anyone but themselves.

Study:

Maybe it was all the positivity, maybe it was Amber opening her mouth... but... tonight was just not Team Good Vibes' night. As Amber's aura wrapped around the handle of the study, the door flung open and suddenly Ghosts... and lots of them. Looking like they were having some kind of private personal celebration in the study all turn to look to the trio in unison. The spirits of many of the party-goes that didn't take it all rush towards the heroes, all with a look of utter hatred and jealous at the fact that you're alive and they aren't! Seems like Amber and the others are in for even more running...

Ballroom:

Swift Tart chuckles faintly. "There's not much digging to be had in Shadow Mane, just a large seemingly abandon castle that everypony is afraid to go in for rumors that its' master is pure evil who has sworn vendetta again the great creator Faust herself." They says with a shake of their head, still seeming to have some disbelief in such stories. "It is part of why I left. All those stories, and then my father's own... eccentricities... There was simply no living with him after mother died. So it was best that I distanced myself from him and that town all together. Though tonight has me thinking, maybe it might be time..."

Amber was emphatically not a superstitious pony. She also did not draw an immediate causal connection between her words and the flood of departed ponies bounding toward them. But it's possible that this latter sign of prudence was more a result of her immediate tactical dec

With a crackling flash, Scarlet heard Amber behind him screaming as she bolted down the hallway at full clip.

Maple disengaged her stealth mode and put a tentative hoof on Harmony's foreleg.

"It's okay Harmony. take all the time you need."
Maple's voice was soft... as she looked around the room for ghosts or anything else.

Her eyes finally landing on one of the large Prep counters, and a sink that would be easy enough for her to get into.

"It sounds like you have plenty of digging to do. Not that you should. But you could hire some ponies."

Sip.

"Or you could also just stay away forever. I always say: you are never too young to run away from your problems."

Siiiiiiiiiiip.

"And you would go digging, even after the events you've seen here tonight, Mr. Hero?" Swifty asks with a slight smile and then shakes their head. "The problem with Running away is that no one can run forever and eventually what is chasing them will catch up. That's a simple fact of life. Its then just a matter of do you fight, or let it consume you when you can no longer run? That is the crossroad that is nearing us all it seems. Your friends and Rasophae, and myself and Shadow Mane. Choices will need to be made, Mr. Hero, choices that those involved with will have to live with and there will be no running from them this time." The piebald states as he walks over to the map. "Time is closing in, Dawn will be on us before we realize it. And we still don't seem any closer to our goals. It would be a pity if we lost, just because you weren't up to the challenge."

Maple disengaged her stealth mode and put a tentative hoof on Harmony's foreleg.

"It's okay Harmony. take all the time you need." Maple's voice was soft... as she looked around the room for ghosts or anything else.

Her eyes finally landing on one of the large Prep counters, and a sink that would be easy enough for her to get into.

"Thanks for coming after her too Misty." Maple said, turning to her favorite pony.

Harmony lets out a high-pitched shriek as Maple reveals herself and places a hoof on her. She shoves the diminutive pony away. "Get away from me bug! I won't let you take me like you did our mother!"

"So that's what this is." Maple says... looking down at her shoved aside hoof.

"Rhapsody hasn't been able to tell me what caused so much raw hurt in her when I told her about this.... now it makes sense. Why it felt so familiar."

Maple moves back toward Harmony. "Rhapsody must have told you how much it hurt to learn my secret..." Maple opens the locket on her necklace and holds the picture out toward Harmony... "I spent every day of my life until recently trying to find my Mom... I didn't know who she was, where she was.. or who I even was... and then the day I find her ..I'm standing right there next to her." tears are clearly rolling down Maple's cheeks again as she remembers that moment.

"Bucking Changelings took my mom away too... and not just that, but they also took away everything I ever thought I was." Maple's Magic drops and she looks at Harmony through the holes in her legs...

"I can taste the hate on you and your sister... it's even there in Symphony -Luna bless her she tries harder to hide it... but I taste it every day... all the time. I hate me too. If it weren't for the Ponies here in Cobbleston I don't think I could have survived this." Maple Smiles over to Misty. There are ponies here who still call me friend and I put on a happy face for them."

Maple closes her locket and notices the dried blood on it and her again.... Her power covers her in her pony disguise again and she Looks Harmony square in the eyes.

"I Know your pain, and I'm sorry for causing you and your family more grief at the sight of me. I shouldn't have said what I said before, I'm sorry for that too... I didn't know the depth... Rhapsody... Symphony .... We'll get them back Harmony. But I'm not walking around like this anymore."

Maple struggle climbs her way up onto the counter and gets into the big metal sink... she looks around at the reflective walls and just starts crying.

her magic flairs again and the slender black leg reaches out and turns on the water... it's sound isn't enough to cover the sobs and what could only be the sound of her armor chicking against the steel as she convulses.

"Misty... could you tell me if it's all gone?" Maple asked eyes held tightly shut... She still had friends to save, she couldn't have a breakdown now...

Maple didn't need to see the truth right now. Hating herself was one thing, having others hate her was fine too... but seeing that look in her own eyes... a hate-filled little monster... she couldn't live with that, couldn't cope.

There weren't any mirrors left at the Sugar Shack.

"She's not dead... least that's what Symphony says." Harmony replies after a moment. it would certainly explain why Symphony didn't seem to harbor the same level of dislike that her sisters did. "They never found her after the Canterlot invasion. It is... was... hardest on Rhapsody. She's the big damn hero. Keeping those she cares about safe, that's everything the drives... drove her... So Imagine, big invasion... at the capital that was under high security and very few let in... Rhapsody... she was powerless to do anything... That was the second time..." Maple may recall Rhapsody menti! oning how Harmony nearly died as a foal... back when Rhapsody trusted the little Pegasus and treated her like a little sister.

"Rhapsody... she's not as strong as everyone thinks she was... Not as strong as she made them believe... She just... walls... walled everything off.. She'd rather ignore the pain then deal with it... till you." Harmony sasy with a huff. "You were someone she trusted, one of the few she could... then you were a changeling. A monster. A monster that caused us to lose our mother. And... no pony but her seemed to give a damn... I think it broke her." The white pony sigh and she just sits there, barely seeming to have the energy to move as she just talks, kinda rambling in a way. "Of course she told us... She HAD to... in her own mind. She had to tell somepony that wouldn't just... brush it off..."

She stares down at those purple hooves hers for a long time as Maple cleans up. "I don't forgive you... I- I don't think I can. I don't think I have it in me any more... I've just feel like I've lost everything... And everyone makes me out to be the villain... I can't lash out at the ghosts... I can't comfort my sisters... I am literally useless in all this, so why the hell can't I just be angry?" She says, as its clear despite the reassurance she doesn't believe that her sisters will be saved any more then her mother was...

Maple just sobs more listening to Harmony... there really was nothing she could do, Ponies were just going to hate her regardless of what she did. She had nothing to do with what happened to her Mom or her sisters... but that wouldn't ever make a difference. Even if they saved both Rhapsody and Symphony.. even if Maple stopped everything else in her life and went and found their Mom... it would all be for nothing.

She could turn into anything ... but in her heart she now knew she'd always be nothing in the eyes of these ponies.

"Amber was wrong... I don't know what it feels like to be a parasite... I feel like a cancer."

Maple huddled in on herself even tighter.... "Misty, please help Harmony find her sisters... I'm just going to stay here. let the ghosts get me... it'll be better for everypony."

Scarlet had actually started relaxing a little. He still felt that ever present foreboding. It seemed to permeate the air of the Mansion like an oily extra layer. A layer that was unlikely to clear until they broke the Masque.

Still, Amber seemed happier, Static was back on form. Everything seemed to be on the u—!

‘FLASH!’

Amber is now suddenly screaming behind him, as a legion of ghost ponies charge towards Scarlet and Static!

Turning to Static, Scarlet smiles a sickly, falsely happy smile.

”Oh, this is Fan-Tastic!

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Taking to the air and letting fly with a tirade of the kind of curses his mother would Not have approved of. Scarlet kept a close eye on his friends. He would not lose them.

"Yeah, there never seems to be just an ordinary, calm social event in my life any more," Static says in reply to Amber. "There always seems to be some kind of fightng or running orscreaming." He hears Amber scream. "Yeah, just like that! Still, I can't say enough how glad I am you're here now, Amber."

...

"Amber?"

Static turns around. "BUCK ME!" Static runs out of the room. "I'm never going to another social gathering for as long as I live!" he cries out as he runs.

”oh come on, its not that bad? You’ve just been attending to many events featuring cursed items of Legend!”

As they ran (or flew in Scarlets case) around the halls of the Mansion, Scarlets brain buzzed as he frantically pulled his thoughts together.

Amber, get to the ballroom! Static, you and i should head to the Lounge! This is getting intense, but we need to keep searching!

"My amulet - huff- still has - huff- some magic left, I'm coming -huff - with you!" Amber panted, lining up with the others at the Lounge.

But not opening the door this time, Amber thought.

While both worried and unsurprised by Ambers response, Scarlet had no time to argue as they ran.

”Ok, if you’re sure. Just keep an eye on your amulet then.”

As they rounded the hall again, Scarlet had an idea.

Misty looks back and forth between Maple and Harmony. She's getting overwhelmed, overstimulated, and overly anxious. This continuous drama, combined with the persistent fear of a ghost attack at any minute, is even breaking somepony as normally upbeat as her. She wraps her face in her wings.

[colors=#3399cc]"No, no, no, no! Please! Please don't... I... I think we're all goners... if we can't work together, it's all over, we're goners."[/colors]

Maple was out of the sink in a flash (or as near to it as a socking wet changeling with her eyes half closed can be), her magic igniting and flickering out in mid-leap... until she was snuggling her Marefriend in a close tight hug. tut-tutting ever-so-softly under her breath as she rocked softly.

"I'm Sorry Misty... all I wanted tonight was another dance, not any of this..."

*FOOOMP* "Oh for Celestia's Sake!" If there was anypony out there who knew something about Changeling biology, Maple would love for them to come explain to her mane and tail that they weren't real and they could quit doing this.

So there they were sitting in a Kitchen. Maple, the giant red and white frizz ball... Misty Monsoon, the girl she loved... and Harmony, the girl who hated her for no reason -whom Maple was going to try and help anyway.

Foyer:

This room is the grand entry hall that everypony first seen when they entered. Trying the large double doors reveals they are sealed shut and doesn;t seem like anything will make them budge. On the bright side that means the Symphony didn't leave the house, on the dark side it means she;'s still trapped here somewhere. One the west wall there ware a series of five torches spaced between pictures, while the opposite side only has three.

Kitchen:

Everypony is there when Night Cap makes his glorious arrival, even Harmony just remains laying where she is, seemingly unaffected by the two lesbians hugging it out. Though not all remains calm for long as a large overweight ghost with a long scraggly mustache emerges from the fridge, wearing a large torque blanch, and a white jacket that seems to be stains with... hopefully food. It sees the intruders in the kitchen and growls at them, hurling a spectral meat cleaver towards the couple. "No Civilians a-loud in ze kitchen! GET OUT!" It yells in a heavy prench accent.

Spoiler

Static gives Amber a sideways glance, but realizes he won't be able to change her mind. "Just don't push yourself too hard. I'd rather not get Rhapsody back just in time to inform her of your death."

As they enter the Foyer, Static looks around.

Spoiler

He sees nothing.

there is a distinctly missing section of Fluff on Maple when she skitters to a stop in the Hallway beside the others. being the biggest looking thing in the room at the time it only stands to reason she would have taken the hit.

"ouch..."

"Oh, Static, really, I'm fine," said Amber with a smile as she surveyed the grand entryway, looking over the paintings, nudging this or that bit of panel or molding with her horn, and glancing up at the chandelier above.

Spoiler

Staying airborne, Scarlet swwops around the Foyer, noting the Torchs and thinking of the clues they’ve found referring to darkness and torchlight. However, this time his search is for clues to Symphony, or the still on the loose killer Stallion.

Spoiler

Foyer:

Static's concern and worry seems to distract him from being able to find anything useful, while Amber seems to have gotten over the recent attack enough to find another scrap of paper. "Conserve your efforts to reap what you sew." while Scarlet's aerial efforts helps him make note of the main oddity in the room, when he ends up finding a piece of paper near one of the torches, the edges singed from the flames. While the flames have made much of the parchment illegible it does seem to contain another hint to where the lost unicorn may be 'Knight and Light combine to drive Darkness away.'

Spoiler

Landing near Static and Amber, Scarlet held up the singed paper.

“Another hint abouts Knight, Light and Darkness. Though this ones says ‘Knight and Light combine to drive Darkness away’. Again, its Knight with a K, so there is a connection. Sadly, i can’t see it yet.

Did you two find anything?”

"Nah, I didn't find anything," Static sighed. He rubbed his eyes. It had been a long night. It was then he realized he was still wearing his mask. "Damn this stuffy thing!" he growled, ripping the mask off. As he ripped the mask off, he also reopened some of the scratches, but not too badly. Then he remembered why he was wearing it in the first place and held his breath to see how the others reacted to his mangled face.

"Thank you... Maple..." Misty noticed that Maple's talisman is glowing dimly. "Oh dear, Maple... you've got to head back to the ballroom and get that charged back up!"

Amber squealed as she retrieved the clue scrap, backing away from the wall and magically lifting it over her head while performing a quick double-canter pirouette beneath it. "Aha, capital!" She was nearly convinced she could hear a brassy musical phrase in the distance.

"Ah, I mean to say, ah, yes, I've found something, Mr. Spectrum," she said. "Conserve your efforts to reap what you sew, spelled in the textile sense. I think it's about another artifact. Conserve might well be a reference to the conservatory, but there's nowhere I've seen in the mansion for any seamstress work or agriculture." After a pause, she added, "Taken together it sounds like something my mother Bay Leaf would say about the importance of doing the mending."

She glanced at Static. "Why do ponies insist on keeping rosebushes in front of secret passages anyway? It's terribly inconvenient to guests. I suppose it's better than waterfalls, really you can't imagine what the lightest spritz of water does to this mane," she continued, pawing at her fringe with a hoof. "Oh, the things I won't miss living by the sea, it must be said."

Harmony looks over to Misty, the white mare still seeming... hollow and empty after revelations in the Kitchen. "I think she looks fine, probably best to stay away from the Ballroom for now. Blobby just came from there, we'd hate for him to look ineffectual by tucking tail and returning so soon, wouldn't we?" Her voice seems to have lost some of its boldness as she looks to the group. "Need to try somewhere else, probably."

Spoiler

Amber fanned out her notes again, taking down Scarlet's discovery with a satisfied flick of her pen alongside her own and those she'd collected from the others in the hallway. "I think we should give this room another look over for clues about the artifacts and suspect before we move on. I've recorded everything we've found so far - perhaps one of you can see some patterns I've missed?" She spread the papers in front of her and motioned the others to her. "Whoever put these together certainly does have a taste for awful puns."

Scarlet blinked as he saw Statics face.

”It’s... not so bad...

Mostly dried blood and, uh...”
As Scarlet looked a little at The left side of his friends face, he. Saw that, well.

”Look, i’m really sorry Static.”

Pulling out his own mask, since he wasn’t about to make Static put his old, bloody one back. Making a few quick alterations (See: ripping bits off). Scarlet handed his friend a rough half-mask. With a low chuckle, he said.

”Now you look kinda like a character from a movie Mom starred in. A masked pony in a Opera house causing havoc.

Hehe. It even had musical numbers. Now what was it called...?”

Shak8ng his head and hoping Static saw the funny side of things because, even though Statics injuries might not actually be his fault. He still felt bad that Static was injured at all. Turning to Amber and hee notes, Scarlet read over them again and again, hoping to see a link. Or something.

”All these clues seem to point to different things in different places. The only one that seems to imply anything at the moment, is the ‘4 Torch’ one. Could it refer to the torches here? To having only four of them lit? Though with no idea which Torches, or in what order. I’m not even sure of that.

So then. Should we risk searching here again. Or head for the Lounge?”

"Yeah, I've seen that one," Static deadpans, obviously not amused at the implications. He takes the mask and puts it on.

[At least it doesn't have the constant smell of dried blood.]

"Thanks. I vote for going to the Lounge. We may not have Harmony driving us anymore, but I still don't like to be in one place for too long and letting the ghosts find us."

"I really think it's important to be thorough in our searching, Static," said Amber. "We've been most of the way around the mansion now and found quite a number of clues. We can't afford missing something now and having to double back."

Looking suitably chagrinned at his attempt at bad humour, Scarlet sighed and nodded.

“You know, i would agree with you and push to move on. Except that based on Ambers notes, she’s right. Even if we just look at the clues that specifically point somewhere. Like the one that lead me to the Library, or the one that seems to point to the Kitchen. We now how a set of half-answers. We have the Where, now we need to find the What.

Despite the risks, i think we’ve got push caution aside.

Except for one thing. Amber, should anything happen, you are out of here and on your way to the ballroom faster than you can teleport because on this, Static is right. I don’t want to stand in front of Rhapsody only to tell her we failed you.

Got it?”

Taking to the air again, Scarlet mentally crossed his hooves.

”Also keep a look out for an secret passages in here. If there was one in the Conservatory, there must be more.

"Should we try the dining room again?" Misty suggests. "I hope that... you-know-what... is done eating..."

"That one explains why the cook one is so angry."

"a Night Cap... Special Attack? ... where we throw him? what like a baseball... but really fast."

Maple, ponders, as her hoof comes to her chin in a thinking pose...

"Are you Super Strong like your Sister, Harmony? I sure couldn't throw a big powerful Stallion around." Maple's eyes dart to either side before nervous chuckling begins.

Harmony looks to Maple for a moment before replying. "Nope, I'm more about precision. I study archery in my spare time, I prefer not to be anywhere close to anything that can hurt me. Many Earth ponies tend to have a connection with the soil, that's why they are mostly farmers. My connection is... metal. I can influence Small, light weight, metal objects; Like Arrow heads or needles." She says, her voice starting to regain its more natural tone and opens a small pocket hidden on the dress and pulls out a needle. After-all, one never knows when they might need to make correction or fix a ruin outfit... She closes her eyes takes a deep brea! th and tosses it. Rather then just clattering to the floor like it would for many that tried, it flies straight and quick and embeds itself in the wall. "Unfortunately, He's large and not metal. So I doubt I could help there,"

Maple sighs... her magic flares again and when she begins speaking she has an entirely different voice.

"I Guess there's no other way around it then. If the ~Night Cap Fastball Special~ Attack is going to work, we're going to Need the Masked Mystery Mare's Strength."

The flames fade and The MMM stands before them, Slightly taller and much buffer than Maple ever was.

[Night Cap presumably says something about getting new business cards printed.]

"Oh, I want a business card! ...what's a business card?"

Team Reunited +1 now with battle plan for the next ghost they see enter the dining hall, which is luckily free od any spirits for the time being, though it is a complete mess after the last one got through in here.

"It's something you give out to ponies, so you can work for them later..if the business or service you're offering isn't needed right away." The Masked Mystery Mare smiles over to Misty. "Maple's would say something like: Profesional tour guide, amateur gardener ... + free hugs -Contact the Keep, or visit Saccharine Sweet's Sugar Shack."

Maple's lost track of what all is left to look for, so instead of searching for something somepony might have already found she decides to Help Night Cap Search for Symphony

"I hope you find her Mr. Night Cap, it would be very romantic for the dashing hero to save her after all... you two did seem to hit it off...before."

While her comrades look around for Symphony, Misty keeps an eye out for signs of danger.

In the previously never searched at all Dining Hall thus there being no possibility of something being already found, Maple decided to be completely useless and twiddle her hooves. Meanwhile her more competent partners actually manages to find something of use.

Misty found huddled in a corner, another witness. "I-Is it g-gone... O-Oh god... It was H-horrible... it just kept... eating... and Eating... and eating... I cowards here hoping just wouldn't notice me... I didn't want to be eaten by a ghost!" he mare says with a deep shudder. "I thought I would be safe here after that pony attacked that poor girl... Those eyes... those piercing blue eyes looked like they were trying to bore into her very soul..."

While Night Cap found piece of paper that was hard to grasp in his blobby state, but eventually managed to make out "The Darkness conceals the music that you seek."

Annoyed at their overprotective behavior, Amber sulked along behind the stallions toward the lounge, nibbling on a cucumber sandwich from Maple's spread and still thinking about the troublesome clues. Liquid to make runes must be ink, perhaps an inkwell? She already knew the clue about "spikes" would be the most stubborn, with that strangely spelled "hyd".

She shook her head as the trio approached the door and tugged at it with her magic before the others could touch the handle.

As Amber cautiously opens the door from a distance, Team powder Keg was in luck; the room was totally empty and just how Static had left it earlier.

Peeking around the edge of the door and confirming for herself a third time that there were no spectral spectators aspiring to spook, she gingerly stepped inside, her heart beating a bit faster than she felt was reasonable given the circumstances. She set about her search, looking again for anything related to the artifacts. She felt they were just on the verge of a breakthrough, and soon all the clues might begin to make some sense. She worked her way around the room, noting the liquor cabinet but not getting too distracted checking the vintages as she looked for another of these mysterious scraps of paper.

Spoiler

Spoiler

As fate would have it, it seems that checking the vintages is why leads to Amber finding a scrap laying where some bottles are obviously missing... Like the ones before it very little is still ledgible, but there was a one phrase on there that was easy for her to make out. "Friendship isn't the only kind there is."

Static took a look around at the room. He was only in here briefly before. He wanted to catch back up with the others, so he didn't have time to look around. "Yup! I think over there is where I came out of the secret passage. Feels so long ago!"

Scarlet could almost hear Ambers sulk as the headed for the Lounge. However, he was not about to take chances with her amulet weakened. Stallion chivalry be damned, he was not standing before an irritate black pegasus and going “Well, we saved you?”

For now though, the search continued and, while he wanted to find Symphony first. Getting the other half of even one of the clues that would hopefully lead to the counter-spell was just as important. With a frustrated sigh, Scarlet started moving around the room.

Walking over to the two of them, Scarlet addressed the small pegasus. Keeping his voice calm, he said.

”My friend is right. You are safe with us.

I know it is unpleasant to ask, but can you remember anything of what happened before you came to hide here?”

"Alright, ve'll head for the ballroom in just a moment," Misty says to the stallion. She gives the room one last look-over, checking for signs of any other survivors.

Dining Room:

As the ponies search the room again, what the find isn't what they expect as a chill wind whips through the room knocking all the lights out. The spectral forms of three mares can be seen ,each coming from a different direction, Red, Green, and Purple. The Hex Mares have arrived and set their sights on team Reunited +2.

As The Hex Mares sing something comes over the witness they the group found, his eyes glaze over and starts to move to the beat of their song,, and turning to face the trio and rushes at them in a hypnotic gaze. Similarly Harmony also seems to be effected by the song. As the witness tries to attack the skilled ponies, Harmony backs away and looks around, and grabs the first thing she sees and throws it with deadly accuracy... The knife strikes the witness who falls down under the weigh of their own body a similar sight to earlier in the evening... The Hex Mares laugh evilly as they chase the group out, and Harmony collapses to the floor...

Spoiler

Everyone suffers one damage. Witness is Dead. Harmony has fainted.

This is me going easy as I felt it was unfair to have Rasophae attack, which would have gone for Night Cap, when he just recharged.

I'll get to the Lounge soon.

Of course I had to use this song.

"Capital work, everypony!" said Amber, copying the new clues into her notebook. "I feel we're nearly at a breakthrough here."

She turned to the small pegasus. "Before we take you back to safety, you don't happen to remember anything about what you saw tonight, do you?" she asked.

"OH PONYFEATHERS!" Maple yells... as well everything happens... she's not even sure when she turned back into herself. Whas it when the Ghosts showed up or was it when Harmony Killed that guy.

"O_O"

Lounge:

The Witness they found backs away from Static some as the other two walks over. She looks to Amber before finally seeming to steel her gaze on Scarlet. "Uh yeah... The uh... pony... they didn't move quiet right... like something had come over them."

Scarlet smiled reassuringly.

”Thank you.

Now lets get you to the ballroom. It is protected there. You will be safe there.”

Motioning to the others, Scarlet reached out a hoof to the pegasus and indicated the door.

Amber, too, thanked the survivor and followed Scarlet to the Hallway.

Static follows to the Hallway, a bit bummed that the witness was still scared of him in spite of his attempts to calm her.

Hall:

Both teams now in the hall, end up meeting out front of the Ballroom.

Amber once again guided the survivor into the Ballroom with a nod, though she wasn't smiling this time.

"What happened?" she asked Night Cap, looking over the unconscious Harmony. "Have you found anything?"

Amber frowned in contemplation. Now that Harmony was unconscious, it would only be practical to tie her up for her own protection before leaving her in the Ballroom, but Amber was unsure how to broach the subject. She began tugging at the mare to remove her from the gooey embrace of Night Cap's costume.

Spoiler

Maple looked at the situation and said the only logical thing that came to mind.

"Once she's free, we should tie her up and leave her here under guard -for her safety as much as everypony else's ... she might not know what happened in there when she wakes up, and Since I need my amulet charged I should be the one left here to guard her."

"If anyone else needs a charge later, Luna forbid -I guess we could take shifts."

Amber couldn't hide her unexpected relief. "Miss Jack, what a thoughtful idea!" She smiled as she continued to tug at the unconscious mare.

"Well, Ms. Spark... anypony could be the one to stay and watch her. But she already hates me, so if anypony has to tell her she murdered somepony -under mind control, it certainly shouldn't be somepony she likes."

Amber was caught off guard. "Oh," she said. She seemed to count heads, squinting when she realized nopony was missing. "Miss Harmony was mind controlled? I only meant, ah," Amber shook her head and stepped uneasily backward. "Well it's still a very good idea in any case."

"We found a witness, and then the band ghost appeared and sang a song that made her ... well as you can see, no witness."

Maple added, noting Amber's reaction to the last statement.... Maple Knew Amber Knew about her own Mind Control Powers...so it was better to be specific

Amber nodded. "I see," she said, still catching up with the conversation, some part of her mind still a little stung at having the sudden validation of her misgivings about Harmony being dangled in front of her and then yanked away. She worked her way along to concern. "But the three of you are alright?" she asked.

"To be honest..." Maple says, turning to emphasize the dangling bit of ghost goo where part of her hair use to be... "I don't really know what part of maple is magic and what parts are Changeling bug parts... I don't really enjoy not being Me anymore so I don't often do it - which means I've got very little information on how it all actually works. I just changed shape in the last room... and went back to this when our plan changed... and one would think I'd look whole again? but no.." The green goo wiggles and jiggles as she shakes her head.

"So I guess I'm still hurt somehow from the Kitchen encounter... and well Misty."

Maple places a hoof on her shoulder... "This isn't good for any of us, really."

"Tying her down might not be a bad idea. I was just worried about her hurting herself. But now that she's killed a witness..." Static sighs. "If you think it shouldn't be anyone she likes that should tell her that only leaves...well...pretty much everypony! So let's just figure out who's injured and who can still search rooms. I guess that probably means we'll be switching up teams again."

Amber nodded to both of them glumly. "Yes, of course," she said to Night Cap.

Perhaps it would be best for you to return to your Changeling form for now, Miss Jack, she didn't add, looking at the little pegasus pony with a mix of compassion at her oozing hair, already a rather alien thought, and apprehension that Maple might suddenly transform into a giant insect and, more importantly, not herself. Maple's appearance, now that Amber understood it for what it was, was so different from the illusions Snowy Skies had used to unsettle and annoy his friends. Somehow, it didn't bother Amber at all knowing that Maple was a Changeling so long as she knew Maple was Maple - but seeing that she was, as Amber had tried to avoid doing in the Library, was a bit more than Amber wanted to invite for herself.

To Static, she nodded again. "Miss Jack needs to recover, or at least recharge her amulet," she said. "She has to stay either way. I, for one, am unharmed, and my amulet has most of its magic left. Does anypony else need to stay?"

Amber guided the limp Harmony, as gently as she could manage, to drift into the Ballroom for Maple to restrain and keep watch over.

"If she's been mind-controlled, Harmony may not be herself when she wakes up. Or worse ..." Amber said, rethought her addendum, and continued. "Could she be a danger to ponies inside the Sanctuary? It may not be wise to leave Maple to keep watch by herself."

"...So she's just like that one that killed the other pony..." The living witness the other team found speaks up in her meek voice, seeming to not want to get too close to Harmony either...

"If that's true, we may well be on a wild hippogriff chase looking for the killer," said Amber, quietly. "It could be anypony, and they may not even remember that it happened."

"this gets worse the more we know." Maple says as she walks into the Ballroom

Maple finds as she tries to enter the Ballroom, that it is like trying to walk through a brickwall.

"ouch mah nohz!"

Scarlet had stayed silent up until no, though he wasn’t sure he liked the way some decisions were going. Ambers ‘I’m Fine’ attitude worried him. She was right to insist that Maple go recover, certainly. However, Amber might be physically [/I}unharmed. Her amulets magical protection was weakened. Thus, were they to encounter her again, Scarlet was unashamedly concerned for Amber.

However, that was in the future and, though he would protest her simply heading off with them again. First things first.

It now seems clear that the Masque, as ‘Rasophae’, has given this mental manipulation powers to its Hex Mare minions. Looking down at his own amulet, Scarlet cocked his head. ”Perhaps these amulets guard us from that too? Or perhaps it is more that the manipulative nature of whatever dark magics are being used, can capture and twist an unfocused mind that much more easily. Remember, Harmony is scared, desperate and mentally frazzled by everything tonight. An easy target.

I also don’t think saying she murdered somepony is right, or kindest, way to break things to her. Mostly because, when you get right doen to it, Harmony wasn’t in control of herself at that moment.

Anyway. Onto the good news.

"It feels like somebody doesn't want me in there."

Amber looked at Night Cap. "When the ghosts chased me out of the study, I felt a discharge from my amulet," she said. "If that hadn't been the case, I think they would have been able to take me."

She looked at Maple. "Perhaps Swifty can be trusted to watch over Harmony after all. Does anypony have anything like rope? I'm not familiar with transmuting fabrics and it would take me some time to make anything useful of her costume."

Maple gives the door a swift buck and then trotted back over to Amber.

Misty pokes the door.

Misty finds she has no issue entering the ballroom.

"Strange," said Amber, as she watched Misty step inside. She looked over Maple's amulet, which still glowed softly with its magical charge, similar to Amber's own. She cocked her head and considered Maple's ectoplasmic accessory. "Night Cap, have you entered the sanctuary since you were ..." she struggled for words as she looked Green Night Cap up and down. "Decorated?" she finished.

Scarlet grinned, pulling out some rope from the hidden pack under his cape.

”Don’t leave home without it.”

Frowning at the door, he looked between it, Night Cap and Maplejack.

”Whoever goes in with Harmony needs to tell Swift Tart about the ballrooms... barrier spell(?) rejecting Maple.

Hmm...? Maybe its because of the spectral residue left fr—no, not possible. It would have affected Night too.

Ah.

Night Cap. While i don’t doubt you have unique abilities. This situations is, while similar in many ways to manaces STOMP, or you, may have faced before. The Masques powers are strong and malevolent. My speculation is just that, speculation. Don’t take any chances with this. Especially if you think you’re immune.”

"well, I guess I could swap amulets with somepony the room does like and they can go make sure Harmony is okay, and also charge up mine. It's not like going in there with somepony who hates me for existing sounded like a fun idea. It just seemed like a nice way to spare one of you from having to be the one to do it."

”Hates you? Why?

...

Wait. She hates you? or hates the fact that you are a Changeling? It might not mean much, but there is a subtle difference.”

Maple turns an eye to Scarlet Spectrum.

"Mr. Spectrum, When you're hated for something you had no control over and can't change, the subtlety of the difference ceases to be meaningful. Because of what her sisters told her about me there was no chance for me to meet her as anything but the same creature she -they blame for the loss of their mother. Honestly speaking - while I'd love to help save all 3 of them. I don't believe the odds are in my favor were they choosing whether or not to save me."
