Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Unprecedented massive coordinated attack by Hamas - 7,000 missiles fired in 20 minutes - major physical incursion into Israel somehow, Hamas troops getting across through tunnels, sea routes, and vacation-style paragliders (?!?), literally going door to door in southern towns kidnapping people and stealing military vehicles (??!!). 100 Israelis killed, 900 wounded, 160 Palestinians killed.

This is the worst thing to happen in this conflict in any of our lifetimes and it's just been about 6 hours.

Saw the death toll showing up this morning and at first thought it was a report on the year toll so far, not one unthinkable day.

High ranking Israeli commander taken hostage and paraded in Gaza in his underwear.

Reports of other Israelis being kidnapped and taken to Gaza including civilians.

Towns overrun. Reports of Hamas going house to house.

Stuff on Twitter I'm not going to repost of terrorists posing with dead civilians like big game hunters showing off a catch, desecrating an Israeli woman's corpse, etc. Celebrations in Palestinian towns. Sickening, gut-wrenching stuff I'd normally not take at face value from social media except it's the kind of depraved barbarity that's to be expected from Israel's enemies and they want this stuff out there for all the world to see because it's quite frankly a propaganda bonanza unlike anything ever seen in this conflict.

Where the hug is the IDF? Where the hug is Netanyahu? What an absolute unmitigated disaster on every level. This government and military and intelligence agencies have thoroughly failed its most important duty in no small part because the government is distracted by all the divisive dumb hug jive the right-wing crazies want to do and the endless circus they constantly generate. But beyond that the strategy of just maintaining the status quo with the Palestinians while thinking peace deals with other countries will make you safer when Iran, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah etc plot, equip, and train to murder you has clearly failed. Maybe that works when the IDF and government are capable, but they've been proven far short of that standard. What good are the Abraham Accords when you can't prevent this from happening to your people?

I don't even know what the response to this is after the IDF gets its jive together and pushes them out. The amount of concessions Israel makes for one life are astonishing (and part of the reason Hamas is taking hostages) and now Hamas is carting people off to Gaza en masse to parade around like a Roman triumph.

I know what my visceral, substantially disproportionate response would be.

Israeli death toll up to 150.

Israel has cut off electricity to Gaza. Gaza does have its own limited production capacity but that's usually reliant on fuel from Israel.

Shouldn't the Iron Dome have intercepted those rockets or did Hamas just fire too many at once?

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

According to the reports I've seen, it was just over whelming. I guess they never considered the possibility of this scale of fire.

May have considered it, but thought it was too low a possibility or knew that the tech in it's current state wouldn't be able to offer much protection in such a scenario anyway. Not sure what Hamas thinks the end-goal would be by doing this. Giving Israelis an excuse to crack down on Palestinians doesn't exactly help their cause, neither does pissing off a good chunk of Europe and the Americas.

Iron Dome typically has a 90% success rate. 10% of thousands is still hundreds left. Though at the risk of adding to an already grisly day, we don't know many details on precise causes of death.

Oh that's easy: Hamas is the martyr. Israel is going to crack all the way down (rallying behind the current government, in the process. Everyone is going to forgive netenyahu's indiscretions, or at least forget for a while.), and give the other militant, traditionally israel hating nations in the region an excuse.

Does palestine know this? Of course not, a bunch of saudi's or iranians telling palestine to die for THEIR victory isn't going to fly. They probably think a whole hug ton of backup is coming now that they've opened the flood gates.

That's always been a concern. One of the reasons Israel has been hesitant to get into it with Hezbollah and have been worried about a multi-front war is Hezbollah have far, far more rockets than Hamas. Some estimates put it at between 100,000 - 150,000.

The day after 300 Israelis were killed and 1500+ wounded and dozens kidnapped and taken to Gaza the New York City Democratic Socialists of America are... holding a rally for the Palestinians. Boggles the mind.

"Free Palestine" "From the river to the sea" the true meaning of these slogans were demonstrated from street to street, house to house in overrun towns today.
