The Republicans use the abbreviation GOP (“Grand Old Party”) rather than Rep basically to avoid that confusion, apparently.Ohh, sorry, whenever I see "rep.", I think it's "Republican" rather than "representative". When we need to specify what party a politician is, we either put the full word before their name, or an abbreviation (a single letter one as long as that's unambiguous) in parenthesis after their name.
