Ohh, sorry, whenever I see "rep.", I think it's "Republican" rather than "representative". Whoops, sorry. Maybe Americans think all British Members of Parliament are military police officers? ;)
The Republicans use the abbreviation GOP (“Grand Old Party”) rather than Rep basically to avoid that confusion, apparently.

They don't usually put that before people's names either, though.
When we need to specify what party a politician is, we either put the full word before their name, or an abbreviation (a single letter one as long as that's unambiguous) in parenthesis after their name.
