Last Night:

Oh wow! I'm actually going to get to bed on time. That never happens.

Uh oh! The sirens are going off. Better check my phone. Yup! Tornado warning for the next hour. Oh, and there goes the power. hug my life.

This Morning:

Okay, I survived. My phone's only at half charge. That's lovely. Flood warnings. Guess I better take the interstate with the rest of the ass holes. I want my ******* coffee!

i mean we also have completely genetically screwed up dogs in ways that should be made illegal so like

that's our fault mostly.
I think there's no better proof of mankind's collective evil than the fact that we took the mighty wolf and from that created things like the Chihuahua and the Jack Russel.

We purposely bred them wrong, as a joke.

It's late. I've had enough vodka that I can barely see. I suddenly have the most intense craving for some Italian-American food. I feel like I could eat an entire 2-foot long chicken parm sub right now, and I feel like I'd want another course after 10 minutes.

The Japanese version of the Showa movies called them yosei which is their term for nature spirits/fairies. I also remember watching the english dub of the movie where Godzilla, Rodan and baby Mothra jump Ghidorah on cable as a kid and they were called fairies.

Because I know I can always count on all of you to do better than any Wiki I could find, there's something I always found odd.

Dante Alighieiri was, according to the one wiki I read, Catholic. So I can only assume he wrote The Divine Comedy from the the point of view of a Catholic.

And yet I'm reading The Inferno and, well, there sure is a lot of stuff coming straight out of Greek mythology.

So I guess my question is...uh...wha?

Edit:
Also, damnit, Amazon! They have a bunch of different versions of the Iliad and the Odyssey, each with different price tags...even the kindle versions. And you know what, the reviews are useless because you can never tell what version they're talking about because Amazon habitually throws together all the reviews.

Same thing when I'm looking at one of several Bluray releases of a movie vs other releases of the same movie...just...gah! Amazon reviews are so infuriatingly useless!

1. Dante wanted to show the triumph of the Catholic faith over paganism, hence dumping all their characters into Hell and having Vergil straight up denounce classical religion. This is why the virtuous Pagans were depicted as eternally lacking true enlightenment and still in Hell despite their only sin being not getting baptized.

2. He depicted the sinners and monsters from mythology as transgressing against divine law in general. The Greek/Roman gods were conspicuously absent because for Dante, there was only one capital G God and mythology was incorrect about who was in charge even if he agreed with the judgement of the sins.

3. Being Italian, mythology worked its way into their culture even if it was no longer a religious narrative. The educated class were expected to study Greek/Roman history and literature during the Middle Ages.

4. It kept him from having to make up dozens of OCs nobody cares about and exposit their backstories. Most readers would already know what mythological characters have done.

do people think they didn't study the Classics anymore once Christianity came around???????????
Noooo! Not sure where you got that notion.

I was just noting that I'm surprised that in Dante's depiction of what he envisioned hell to be, he would include characters from a pagan religion I would seriously doubt he'd credit as being real.

But the others already answered the question, so, thanks.

speaking of religion, christ myth believers are so funny to me

like not even talking from a religious perspective but just from a historical perspective, which makes more sense:
- there was a jewish preacher named jesus living in judea who gained followers because of his preaching and was arrested and crucified by the roman authorities and his followers believed him to be the messiah they were waiting for as jews and this spread and eventually grew from just being a sect of judaism to its own religion

- a bunch of jewish people just decided to like friggin make up a guy and claim that yeah that guy was the messiah (while also apparently making up things that would certainly be embarrassing for a messiah like...being frickin crucified)

not even going to get into the fact that absolutely no genuine scholars of antiquity support any claims that jesus was not an actual historical figure. yes, scholars - regardless of if they are christian or non-christian - will distinguish between the historical jesus and the christ of faith but they will all agree that there was a jesus and the existence of a historical jesus is not up for any debate.

it's only non-experts and those with an agenda to push who try to make the claim that jesus was not a real historical figure

People just love to play this game. It's the same with the "Woah, what if Shakespeare didn't really exist?" crowd.

You're lucky. All I get are emails from Jeff bBezos and Ellon Mask offering to give me millions of dollars because of the pandemic or something. Not sure why Mister bBezos would need iTunes credits but I hear these wealthy people can be quite eccentric.
