Makes me wonder if they're planning a Nintendo DS Nintendo Switch Online app and maybe a Nintendo 3DS Nintendo Switch Online app as in flip it 90 degrees and play it that way.

From the sounds of the patent, no. You can't flip it 90°, just 180° Basically the Joycon 2s can be placed in either side of the console.

I wonder what possible use that could have. Flipping them backwards cuts off access to all the shoulder buttons and also probably makes the device harder to hold. If it still has the IR sensors that the original Switch had, they'll be facing the other way, but what good that does when the device is undocked I can't imagine. Flipping the screen the other way around... does nothing special since they already put USB ports on both sides?

One suggestion is that people may prefer the headphone jack on a specific side. Or you know, just basic tablet functionality?

You're going to have to dial back the snark and explain what you mean by "basic tablet functionality." Tablets have screens that flip around so they can be used in multiple orientations (this has nothing to do with that) and so you don't have to pay attention to which way you pick them up (also not relevant when the alternative to just flipping the whole device around is to spend even more time taking the joycons off and reattaching them).
