I'm confused why this is relevant. That was an entire remake that didn't require owning the original to play it. There's no precedent for Nintendo selling upgrades to existing games for any price, so we're in uncharted waters here. Unless we want to compare this to what some other studios have done where they would release an "enhanced edition" on Steam and made it free or cheaper for people who already own the original version.
I brought it up NOT as a gauge for the upgrade costs, but as reference for what new Nintendo flagship games cost at that time. That's the yardstick I'm using it for.

I mean...they sort of did that on the Wii U?

If you had games on the Wii VC that were also available on the Wii U VC, you could upgrade to the Wii U VC version for a bit of a discount compared to the full price.
Oof. That's... even worse actually, because Virtual Console games run exactly the same no matter which emulator you use. So they were literally charging extra just for the privilege of continuing to play the games you'd already bought. On a console that's already backward compatible with the previous generation's own games.

>sees the news

well can't wait to pay $1000 for the fuckin switch 2 lmao
I assume the pricing is with the tariffs taken into account. Nintendo isn't going to drop a 50% price hike over the old system, knowing tariffs are coming, and then go "Psych! It's actually even more!"

Well I mean you did technically get some new features like save states, off-screen play, Miiverse and IIRC there was controller config too.

But yeah it was otherwise the same games lmao.

Yeah but I don't think anyone was expecting 46% tariffs on goods manufactured in Vietnam.

I do think Nintendo was pricing this with tariffs in mind but were thinking they might be 20-25% at most.

(I also don't think Nintendo is going to suddenly jack up the price immediately but, assuming nothing changes, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a price increase next year)

Yeah, not to get into P&R territory, but a big reason I'm suspecting for the $450 console and $80 Mario Kart price is that Nintendo IS factoring in current...issues...into their pricing. Probably why we haven't seen any price cuts for the original Switch console as well.

They sold the original Switch at a slight loss in 2017, but didn't require the purchase of as many games to make the system profitable (I want to say Reggie said that selling 3 full priced games basically mitigating whatever loss Nintendo was taking on the hardware). I expect the same here. Despite the new features, everything is pretty standard, the APU core is 2 or 3 years old, and if the average game cost is higher.

Barring any more tariff shenanigans, I expect the Switch 2 to break even or even a profit per console in a couple years. Dependent on how well it actually sells, of course.

Eh, depends on how well the system sells and other factors. I know the PS4 got a price bump in some regions several years ago because of similar issues, but they opted not to push it in the US or Japan

A glorious realization occurred to me…
The Switch 2 has, basically, a mouse. Hamster is releasing Ridge Racer as an Arcade Archive 2 title. That was made by Namco who also made Time Crisis.
Could we get a port of Time Crisis using the Switch 2 mouse mode?!

Oh Lordy, bring on the light gun ports! The Virtua Series, House of the Dead, Lethal Enforcers…my Xbox library for a port of Crisis Zone with that GLORIOUS HD rumble!

Here, it's $629.99 for the base model, $699.99 for the bundle with Mario Kart World.

And they aren't telling us how much the games are yet.

I've seen people reacting to all sorts of various numbers, though, all north of $100, with the highest being $130.

I don't know if Nintendo was just too cheap to have the boat make a second stop in Vancouver so Nintendo of Canada could handle it or what, but... oof.

Worst part is, waiting really isn't an option for my wife and I.

THAT SAID, I found the Switch 2 to be... fine? I guess? Nothing about the console itself really blew me away, and hard to believe they're letting Sony get a W over them with that intro game.

Mario Kart World has my eye, but I have some issues with it. Mostly pet peeves. Might enjoy it more when I actually play it.

Donkey Kong Bananza was the savior for me, though. That's the DK game I've been dreaming of for years, if not longer.

Figures this would be a real monkey's paw wish situation with the rest, though.

The price of the console is totally fair and actually about what I expected. The price of games seems to be creeping up though. People raised a ruckus when the average game raised to $70, which wasn't that long ago. Now we're going to see some reaching $80.

I'm sure I'll get the bundle eventually. But I'm gonna have to save up some funds first.

I'm worried about that as well. I've seen some speculating that expected tariffs would already have been baked into the price, but I've seen nothing indicating that any businesses were expecting them to be as high as what were announced. I could definitely see the price going up at some point.

If so, I'm guessing it would be a post-launch increase. I imagine they'd rather eat some losses for the sake of a big launch than make their announcement and then immediately change the price. If so, that will probably hit me since I can't go in at launch this time around. My employer recently made us all start coming back into the office again. My car had basically sat unused for five years and it quickly became obvious it needed some work done. I've ended up spending about $3600 on it this past month, on top of having also needed new tires for my wife's car. Going to take us a while to recover.

We have evidence that Nintendo had been importing hundreds of thousands of Switch 2s into the US since January, so those would obviously be exempt from the tariffs (since, y'know, they didn't exist when they were imported) so the best theory I've seen is that those will sell through, Nintendo will eat the loss on the tariffs for the rest of the year for future Switch 2's (obviously they don't wanna hug over their first holiday season by doing a price increase), and then likely do a global price increase in 2026 to offset the increased tariffs.

That makes a lot of sense. My hope right now is that Best Buy does another 2-year 0% financing offer during the holiday season. I had been just about to buy a new TV right after Christmas, but I mixed up the dates of the offer and it expired right before I went to use it. If it's offered again this year, and IF everything hasn't gone completely to hell by then, I'll be very tempted to pick up a Switch 2 and a new TV to use it with.

The real question is whether the stores will jack up the price just because they can, and hope people assume it's the tariffs' fault. Because the "S" in MSRP doesn't stand for "mandated."

I've just thought, could they revisit third party titles with upgrades like Doom, Doom Eternal and Mortal Kombat One,
Will Capcom have it's Resident Evil remakes available on the console as digital downloads rather then cloud.
And could we get a Wii VC down the line with a wiimote plus and sensor bar accessory.
These aren't actual questions just thoughts on my part otherwise I'm in.

I 100 percent expect the RE games.

Doom and MK1 could get general "performance patches" like S/V is getting. That would depend on publisher though.

I do want to note.. I don't think most people just realize how much power is put into effectively a tablet here.

This is NOT cheap hardware.
From the half assed research I've done...the specs would put the relative gaming capability on par with an Xbox Series S. But portable.
Edit: An Nvidia Blog about the system, citing "10x increase in power over the original" which would put the system's docked performance around an Xbox Series S.

And using a Series S since launch? I'm MORE than satisfied to that level of uplift, and we KNOW that a good developer can eek a LOT out of lower power hardware. With various DLSS or similar Nvidia tech, we could easily see the Switch 2 punch above its weight class (Seriously, check out the Ace Combat port, that is DAMN close to Series S quality).

I find it unlikely that 3rd parties will go back to upgrade older games. In the case of Doom Eternal, I'm not even sure we'll see a "patch fix". I think the sentiment is likely that it will be easier/more cost effective to "re-port" some of those titles rather than try to upgrade titles so heavily modified to work on the Switch. Hell, WB is doing that with Hogwart's Legacy!

We're seeing that with Hitman, so it wouldn't surprise me if native Switch 2 versions of the Resident Evil titles are in talks, if not development.

I was initially negative on the Wii thing...but between the camera support and the integrated gyros...I'm not sure it's THAT unreasonable a thing to do...

It might work for some games, but not every gesture can be mapped 1:1 to position sensing alone. And switching back and forth between rubbing the joycon sideways on the couch cushion and waving it around is going to get annoying.
