Gunpla are everywhere in Japan. You don't need to go to Akiba to get them, as any toy department in department stores over here have them. Convenience stores also stock them as well.They're everywhere in Akihabara.
Went back in 2019. Lots of stores with some Gunpla, and we stumbled upon one with a large floor full of kits, displays, and TVs running Gundam shows.
