I happily signed on to Meta's anti-Twitter, Threads. It may be a matter of choosing one villain over the other, but frankly, I don't care at this point. I'll happily support the most likely candidate to take Twitter down.

No, I'm not back on Twitter. I don't know how many ways to make it clear that I won't ever go back there while Musk owns it.
The only reason I've opened Twitter in the last day and a half is to see if anyone I followed has put up their Threads handle.
Zuck and co. are absolute trash and monsters, but Musk is actively trying to turn Twitter into mainstream Truth Social.
The fact I can't open any larger Twitter thread without spending the next 15 minutes blocking blue checks before I see my first sane response tells me all I need to know about its current status.
Bluesky is a private club you can't get into unless you know someone already inside, and I've never been able to gel with Mastodon, it feels too segmented, like walking through a hallway with closed doors.

The last major lawsuit I remember Musk being involved in was to try and get out of buying Twitter... so... seems like the emptiest of threats.

Everyone on Twitter I have followed who has tried Threads has said it's horrible and not a suitable Twitter replacement.
The main complaint is that your feed does not show a reverse chronological timeline of posts from people you actually follow, but instead shows you whatever recent posts the algorithm decides it thinks you'll like.
Also by the sounds, the app requests a ton of permissions you'd not expect, like fitness data(??)

I'm not pressed about the followers only situation since the alternative would have been totally empty feeds for days to weeks. They've already said a follower only feed is on the list to be added quickly. I'm assuming the chronological feed situation is similar.
Threads the app (presumably named in homage to the 1984 film) isn’t available in the EU as it violates the union’s online privacy laws. Which is yet another reason why Brexit has been terrible for Britain.

Threads is basically a pictureless Instagram. It's not a Twitter replacement at all and I'm shocked Zuckerberg didn't see the writing on the wall before throwing everyone at his algorithm again. Until it gets a chronological feed, I ain't touching it with a 10 foot pole.

Even if I trusted Meta further than I could throw a life-size Trypticon, I won't touch anything that is app-only if I have any choice at all. Not only are mobile apps usually just glorified webpages(in which case why can't I use a browser?), but because of how they're set up they usually try to suck up data like Unicron at an all-you-can-eat planet buffet. And as far as its fediverse connections, most servers I've heard about outside mastodon.social are pre-emptively restricting or blocking it for the same reasons. And that's BEFORE getting into the whole algo-only and whatnot that's already been brought up.
Oh, and if you do set up Threads, you can't delete it wihtout deleting the associated Instagram account too. And I don't know how many here actually care, but because it's tied to Insta, it also means NSFW content is not allowed, so at that point, why not just swing over to tumblr, if you need something centralized?

Considering Google just updated their privacy policy to state that nothing posted anywhere on the internet is private and they will use it all for whatever they damn well please, I actually don't blame Musky for this one.
I wouldn't blame Musk for this one except that I seriously doubt THAT is why he's doing it. He's trying to get more people to subscribe to his paid service and the first step to doing that is to get people to at LEAST have a free-tier account. He's lost a TON of advertising revenue with the changes he's made and now he's trying to stop the site from hemorrhaging even MORE money than it was before he took over. He's just doing it in the most inept ways possible(making his site less visible and putting up extra barriers to use)
