Switch 2 official reveal

Minor thing, but did anyone notice if the Switch2 could use the same dock as the original? It's wider and taller, but I'm not sure if it's thicker.

Also I'm not sue how well dual screen games would play on a single screen system without modifcation.
Tell me about it. I just recently finally got a computer capable of running Lime3DS with only occasional drops into slow motion, and it's made me realize for the first time that there's just no good way to display its two screens on a widescreen computer monitor. And speaking of said slowdown, I wouldn't bet money on the Switch managing to emulate whatever proprietary gubbins were in those clamshells, even with Nintendo having all the documentation of how it worked. Remember how they struggled to even get Nintendo 64 games running smoothly?

Be neatola if Nintendo had revived the DS for it's twentieth anniversary, a new third model capable of playing the DS and 3DS games.

Also, It's possible MP4 and Pokemon AZ will have enhancements for this system but I'm expecting two of their classics: Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild to be BC out the box running 1080p or 1440p and 'maybe' have HDR through an update.

My needs for Switch 2 are simple: Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros. If it can do that, I'm sold.

No answers provided yet that I've seen. This has been my main question for a while now. Or rather, I just want to know about compatibility between Switch 1 and 2 consoles and docks in general. If there's something new that requires you to use a Switch 2 dock for the Switch 2, or if you need a Switch 2 dock to unlock its full performance, fine. But I'd really like to be able to have just one dock connected to my TV and be able to plug in whichever console I want to play at the time. Full BC or not, I'm not just replacing my Switch 1 with a Switch 2.

This is another thing I'm curious about. I'd definitely prefer it if you can just get upgraded performance when running a Switch 1 game on a Switch 2. Barring that, something like how having a PS4 version of a game can unlock access to an upgraded PS5 version could be OK. But I've been seeing rumors about a new Switch 2 version of BotW. I'm definitely curious to see how that will play out.

I doubt any of the Switch 1 accessories will be able to be used. They want to sell you more docks and pro controllers after all.

Controllers will definitely still work. Remember the standalone joycon charger they released last year? That was definitely so people who want to keep their old joycons around as an extra controller (or two) can still have a way to charge them, without needing to also keep the old Switch around.

We can still use Gamecube controllers on the Switch using an accessory made for the Wii U, not to mention new versions of pre-Gamecube controllers. Thinking the Switch 2 wouldn't play Switch 1 games was silly, albeit at least rooted in somewhat plausible reasoning. Thinking they wouldn't support any peripherals that don't have some reason they just won't cut it is just ridiculous.

That's why I'm wondering about the dock, though. They're made to fit the console pretty closely, but the form factor has changed. Can both consoles physically fit into any single dock? They both carry out the same basic functions of providing power to the console and an HDMI output to the TV. Can the old dock supply enough power? Can it handle the presumably 4k output of the Switch 2? Does the Switch 2 dock supply any other functionality (e.g. cooling) that the Switch 1 dock doesn't have?

Those sorts of concerns largely don't exist for things like controllers. Sure, there are hints that the new Joy-Cons may have some sort of mouse functionality that current Joy-Cons wouldn't support, and there's one new face button on the right Joy-Con. There's a good chance that there will be some games that you simply can't play as intended, or even at all, with old Joy-Cons, but I'd bet you could get by just fine with the vast majority of games.

It doesn't really matter, since every Switch 2 will come with a dock included. Also anyone who sells off their old Switch to subsidize the cost of the upgrade had better not hoard the dock just so they can have a spare.

If I had to make a guess, my guess would be that the Switch one can fit in the switch 2 dock without joycons on.

But no way switch 2 will work with a switch 1 dock *if rumors are to be belived, the switch 2 dock has a higher power output than the switch 1 dock.

I think I get why the reveal left me “meh”. It felt so…corporate. Ever watch an Apple reveal trailer for one of its product refreshes? It kind of feels like that. It was perfunctory with very little “fun” being relayed with concept.
Yes, it’s just “the Switch you have, but bigger and more powerful”, but there are still ways to relay that in a quick teaser.

I have a feeling it was put together because they pretty much HAD to. All their information had already been leaked. Pretty sure they were planing on unveiling it in April with the direct. Some of the cuts in the video seem to suggest it was originally intended to be part of a longer form video originally. Granted Iwata has been gone for nearly 10 years now, so maybe Nintendo is losing the joyful momentum he imparted.

Yeah, it was like they HAD to have something out by this point to satisfy the rabid speculation from all sides and for the sake of the investors. But given the DROP their stock had…maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to stretch out the reveal to the point they have.

The April “full reveal” says to me that this is probably going to be a late summer or early fall release. Stock drop aside and “mech” response at this stage, many western analysts are bullish on the S2’s sales. Some saying as many as 20 million (which may be why the system hasn’t launched yet: to build up inventory for a big sell through).
Also, reports have come out the IR sensors seem to have gotten the ax, which is probably the reason for the software caveat in the reveal trailer.

I think the Switch 1 Direct next month will be informative to the software Switch 2 will get at launch. It’s a situation where I don’t see Nintendo NEEDING a huge software line up if they got a heavy hitter and some back up. The later release might even allow for a better representation from 3rd parties. My bet is that Mario Kart 9 will be the launch/anchor title, but the big “secondary” will be paid ”4K” upgrades to a number of key Switch titles like Mario Odyssey and the Zelda titles (similar to what Sony does with PS4/PS5 cross gen titles). I’m betting Metroid Prime 4 will be the big fall release across both systems. On the 3rd party side, I’m betting AC Shadows and Doom Dark Ages will be the bigger presences. Metaphor is apt to make an appearance given how RPG friendly the platform has been.
Rumors are Microsoft has a healthy slate of titles that could appear on the Switch platform like Halo and Gears. If the first Switch has shown anything, it’s that a quality game is still a quality game even if they are a bit old.

IIRC the Switch sold so welll that they couldnt keep production up? They might be trying to mitigate that with 2.

I'm just curious if we will get a switch 2 game announcement at the Xbox direct.

Also, I don't think it was "Thrown together because they had to because of the leaks."

Almost everything indicates this was the planned time, as third parties have already said they are ready to start announcing games.

Sure, it comes with a dock. But I for one love the flexibility that comes with the switch. I actually have two Switches, plus an extra dock. That way, I can play on any of the main three TVs in our house, including when my wife or one of the kids is using the main family Switch.

So from that perspective, I'd love it if it were possible to use the Switch 2 in a Switch 1 dock. If it's a case where using a Switch 1 dock doesn't unlock the full power you'd normally get when docked and basically runs in handheld mode, that would be just fine for me. I mean, I'm hoping to get one soon, but at the moment I don't even have a 4k TV. So if I could use my existing array of docks to get regular 1080p performance out of the Switch 2, that would be fantastic.

So, it really IS just a mediocre reveal trailer Nintendo made? :p Again, I think whoever made the trailer kind of, for lack of a better term, “failed to get” the appeal of a new Switch. It’s a little bigger, it’s got some new connectivity options…but I never bought the Switch for its technical abilities. I bought it for the games and that was quite lacking in that regard. As interesting as Mario Kart 9 looks, a new Mario Kart for a new system isn’t exactly ground breaking.

I don’t expect any game reveals from Microsoft, unless it’s part of a “cross platform” video package. Most of what is rumored for Switch 2 is also rumored for PlayStation.

I’m hoping that the Switch 2 dock has more features to make it a meaningful thing aside from a “charge and video out” stand.

But you raise an interesting point that Linus from LTT also brought up: a big reason for the big Switch sales is that a LOT of households ended up with more than one device. I know in my home, I got a Year 1 Switch while my special needs brother ended up with a Switch Lite. Some comments featured on the LTT video said some people had 3 or 4 (or, one for each person in the house).
I think it remains to be seen if the Switch 2 will be compelling enough to get that entire audience to upgrade. And I feel that will be heavily reliant on the software each platform will see.
